There's more to a budget than discretionary spending.
One can twist numbers any way they want. Try to be realistic please.
Military should be reduced, BUT so should the ridiculous education department. NLRB, HUD and a host of other areas.

Providing for the common defense should be the largest expenditure of the Federal Government. With a few exceptions, all the other entitlement crap they spend our money on is well beyond the purview of the Federal Government's role, according to the constitution. But this is what happens when the constitution no longer matters to those in power.

The Constitution has meant very little to the federal administrations this century

The guy/gal that wears his "service" as a badge, is now concerned about the degree military expenditure.

That's almost as nuts as being a minority/Jew for Ron Paul.

I bet more than half the "military" spending goes to civilians who work for DOD.

10 companies profiting most from war

Quote:
Recession-proof
Sales for the world's 100 largest arms producers amounted to $411 billion in 2010, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. That was up 1% from the year before, a modest rise that was held in check by the drawdown of foreign forces in Iraq.

Military budgets have been largely unaffected by the economic downturn, said Susan Jackson of SIPRI, a peace research group.

Since 2002, arms sales among the 100 largest providers of military equipment and services have increased 60%, SIPRI said in a release last month.

The 10 biggest arms producers accounted for more than half of the 2010 sales. The composition of those sales reflects the state of modern warfare, as battles are now often fought with remote surveillance and air strikes instead of ground combat.

Of the 100 companies on the list, 44 are based in the United States. Sales by the U.S. companies accounted for more than 60% of arms sales revenue in 2010.

The top seven U.S. arms producers are also among Uncle Sam's 10 biggest contractors.

Click ahead for a closer look at the 10 global companies profiting most from war.

Ridiculous education! Why invest/overspend on the future for kids when we can keep invading and killing people who are not like us!..........

Keep investing in war though! I mean war has been proven to solve the worlds problems Even if there are no weapons of mass distruction!! Keep killing! Who cares, its just humans, and they are not even Americans or Christians!!!

I believe we are No. 1 in the world in per captia spending per student in K through 12 education.

Obviously like health care we aren't getting the proper return on our investment. We need to over haul the system or decide results can't be improved and pay less for the crappy results.

Exactly, maybe if Clinton paid more attention we would not be in this situation, but then again good opportunity to thin the herd.

This opinion is able to be given due to the sacrifices of our armed forces. Thank You!

With the amount of money the Federal Govt. pours into the education system, we should be a country of Einsteins. The system is a disgraceful mess, and failing horribly, and it has zero to do with being underfunded. The fed should get out of education and it should be handled on the state level, tenure should be eliminated, mandatory union dues should be eliminated, charter schools should be allowed (hey, pro-choice is good, right?), and we'd be off to a good start.

And this is why despite all the rhetoric and sound bytes and speeches, many of the born again (until they get back in power) fiscal conservatives are full of ****.

There is so much wasteful tax spending in defense that it is criminal in every sense of the word. Yet not a word from the Bachmans, Romneys, Cantors etc on defense spending. Why? Because just as the democratic politicians are in the pockets of special interests, so are many of the conservatives.

Good luck trying to get defense cuts ;

Wow? It's a teacher speaking. What a wealth of experience in the world.
Look at history. Those not prepared will be prey to those that are. Basic stuff.
seducation. It's the education DEPARTMENT, along with the other DEPARTMENTS I cited which are worthless. You're a teacher? Obviously you do not stress READING COMPREHENSION. But perhaps you're still young, inexperienced and still have a lot to learn. No doubt.
Most of the worls's killing BTW has been done without weapons of mass destruction. And will continue to be in all probability.
And frankly, I don't think we kill enough. We are, in fact, far too judicious.

This just in on our fantastic and efficient federal government.
In 2011, the government OVERPAID $14 BILLION in unemployment benefits.
A fine job. That's even more wasteful than the department of education.
Good control. Sultan Obama can raise taxes as much as possible - he still in incapable of controlling spending.

Our military is SMALL. A fraction of what it once was. The fewest ships since WWI. That's ONE.
Fewest divisons since 1940.
Good equipment though.
BTW, the cost of a military (as small as it is) is pretty much the same (90%) whether we're fighting or not. We really do not use that much ordnance these days. There is waste in the miliatry which can be reduced.
Waste in unemployment and Medicare/Medicaid and social security which should be severely prosecuted.

The Military may very well be smaller, however, the maintenance of the Aircraft and Warships alone are huge. The pay for the Troops is higher. The criminal element is that we over pay for F-35's and such to the largest DOD contractors

F-35 to cost $1.45 trillion over next 50 years

Quote:
F-35 Joint Strike Fighter’s long term operating costs are once again at the forefront of the debate about how much the stealthy swiss army knife will cost. Just yesterday, Frank Kendall, acting undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics (AT&L) told lawmakers that while acquisition costs are coming under control the real issue is going to be the price tag associated with keeping the jets flying over the decades.
