I've never had a legit argument/fight with my wife about one discreet thing. Whenever we argue, which is not at all often (and perhaps that's part of the problem), it becomes the Omnibus Argument pulling in things from every direction including my family, my parenting ability (And I am an excellent father), my husbanding skillz (I'm a very good husband, but concede that there is always room for improvement) and anything else that she can think of.

Not surprisingly, these other factors often come out after I've made valid points or am otherwise fairing well in the fight.

Tell me about it. I get a reminder every day when I hear my wife telling me how cute they are and how could I not want another. My recent response is "I'm going to wake you up 3 times - screaming - a night for the next 3 months. If you don't scream mercy before that, I'll consider it.

Did you have the urge to say something along the lines of "It looks like Mr. Met threw up on your kids?" That thought did cross my mind when I put the picture up.

In addition to the "Snowball" / "Firehose" tactic where you get blasted with all your historic shortcomings, there's always the "You always..." and "You never..." qualifiers that just ratchet up the BP.

My brother in law, says, when it gets too crazy, just end the fight/discussion, chill, slip out of the house for a mo', maybe to the man cave, and mirabile dictu, that gambit usually works a treat.
