I think he's ready to whip it out because you told him it was a mountin' bike.

Pretty sure that would get my vote for JI GOAT since I've been a member.

Disc brakes are a must, some bikes don't put them on, and then you'll need them after. Try stopping without disc breaks when your tired is all muddy. Not happening.

Hit me up with questions.
This is just not true.

A mountain bike is probably the better way to go if you don't want a road bike or a fixie. I would switch the tires out though. Maxxis make a tire called the Hookworm which are 2 1/2" mountain bike tire width, but don't have the aggressive tread of a mtn bike tire. The walls are pretty thick too, so you don't have to constantly sweat over road conditions. Plus, you can go off road in a pinch if you have to. Then just switch out your tires if you want to do actual off road riding.

Best of both worlds.

My next bike is going to be a Pinarello Dogma Carbon with Campagniolo electronic (no cables) gear shifter.

If this doesn't go as planned, a kayak may be the next choice. No, I'm not kidding.
Gary Fischer bikes rule, although they're made by Trek now. I also like the 1Fg gearing for flatland or downhill.
As for kayaks, I own 3 Riot boats. all whitewater, no rec boats

Whatever bike you choose, choose not to do wheelies. You will lose.

Santa Cruz makes nice bikes. Maybe just a hardtail for the riding you will be doing, if you want and is in your price range the Blur is nice full suspension.

I've heard leasing may be preferable to buying.

POSSIBLY.

Fwiw, kayak is way cheaper. But they don't perform well on pavement. Your choice.

"kayak" is a gay code word, so if you buy a bike, the closest thing to a gay brand would be Huffy. Sounds exceptionally gay.

Especially if you get it with a sissy bar.

That is so not my price range. At least what I looked at wasn't.

I know, the price for a decent kayak is about $300. The bike is going to run me at least double that. Mebbe I could use the kayak in the winter, rig it with some runners or something.

Seeing as you are involved in this interaction, that makes you a bit European as well, my friend. Perhaps you'd like to get in early on the tandem kayak?
