I don't need a recommendation on a tv, just a recommendation on its placement. Will putting a flat panel LCD tv over a fireplace mantle do any harm to the tv? I've heard that it can cut its life-expectancy significantly, but I'm not sure if that's true. Something to do with the heat that emanates up from the fireplace as well as from behind the wall in the chimney. This is a wood-burning fireplace, not a gas fireplace, if that makes a difference.

Also, if anyone has that kind of set-up, what did you do with the boxes (DVR, DVD, etc)? Did you also run the wires behind the wall?

Sorry to distract from all the divorce talk, but this is serious business.

Hot air rises. I suggest you relocate your fireplace further up the wall and put the TV below it.

I thought about that. But I think it's a load-bearing fireplace.

Interesting concept, I've never heard of fapping into a fire before. But I could see how that might make it more difficult.

Bad idea.

I know a couple of people who had to replace a TV within a couple years of mounting it above the fireplace.

It usually makes sense to conserve space, but unless you're OK with buying a new TV every 2-3 years, put it somewhere else... or at least make sure you put a big, thick mantle under the TV to shield it a little bit. If you build (or have someone else build) a custom mantle, you could hide the wires in there.

As I understand it, it is mostly a problem with plasma screens, lcd TV's do not put off near the heat a plasma does.

If you have a mantle between the fire place and the TV it will help deflect the heat quite well.

My set up, I channeled out room for a conduit to run from behind the TV to the lower cabinet to the right that holds the equipment before I installed the cabinets and tile on the fireplace. Also added an electric outlet behind the TV and used an articulating TV mount to ease in hooking every thing up.

I know, the aesthetic issue is another one that vexes me. However, the fireplace isn't a stone one like you posted. It's a polished black granite opening with a wooden mantle above and then just a plaster wall covering the chimney.

As much as I'd like to hang an antique rifle there or a painting that depicts a great Naval battle, it's also a prime spot for a 50" tv. This are the times we live in, unfortunately.

Heat shouldn't be rising out of the front of the fireplace...that would mean that the flue needs cleaning out. Fireplaces heat a room by radiating outward...not from the heat that rises from the top of the flames.

But isn't that a bit high to mount it?

Yes, but if the heat is radiating outward, it's also rising in front... right where the TV is mounted.

So unless there is a mantle to block some of the heat, the TV is getting it.

No, it's not terribly high. It'll work, height-wise.

What about the issue of heat through the wall against the back of the tv?

My dads house has it above the fireplace. He has a thick mantle, as other have stated, to shield it and it stays pretty cool above that mark. It is however a gas fireplace, so the doors usually never open. I don't know if that helps.

The boxes and wiring would have been installed through the wall, but the TV was an after thought. They sit off to the side on shelving. Personally being able to reach the box and wiring is an advantage.

If the home is newer and the wall above it is drywall, the flue should be triple wall pipe and shouldn't radiate any heat out from it....
