Put it above the fireplace with a bracket that can tilt downward a few degrees.

HDTV's are so cheap these days it doesn't matter if their life is shortened a bit; just buy a new one.

As far as cord management, the wires get buried in the wall and come out towards the floor where they can be stacked in a small, low piece of furniture. If you do it right, the HDMI cable going into the panel can run through an HDMI home theater receiver which can control all the switching. I've got my FiOS box, my Apple TV, my BluRay, and my router all going in/out this way and it makes life extremely easy, no need for multiple remotes or a confusing universal remote solution.

Also, go to AVS forums, it's a great resource for stuff like this.

AVS forums is good advice. But I'd be more worried about viewing angle than heat, whether it's on a tilt mount or not (don't listen to Sar, he's a wealth of bad info). Rule of thumb is to have your viewing position eye level 1/3rd of the way up the TV. This way while you are sitting it's at a comfy level and if you recline or lay down the TV is still in the correct viewing position . Obviously you can't do that over a fireplace. Think neck strain. Really.

Here's an AVS thread which discusses the topic:

Maybe you are right, I have had my TV over the FP for over 4 years and it workds out great for me sitting in front of it from about 10' away, who ever has to sit on the near end of the couch to the right of the TV has trouble though.
