actually I have tried the NXT, don't like them as well. They're definately a good ball, and I'm sure it's a mental thing, But I've only broken par a couple times and they were all with Pro Vs

Let the putter choose you - get fitted!! Been playing with my Scotty for close to two years (used to have a 2-ball Odyssey) since I got fitted and have knocked 7 or 8 strokes off my game simply by using the right putter.

I can't wait to get back on the course, but this damn herniated disk won't get any better. When I finally feel well enough to play, I'm seriously considering trying out a long putter. Thanks to Keenan Bradley and Adam Scott it's not just for old guys anymore, and I really think it will help my back not having to hunch over a standard 35" putter.

I really have been dying to play all summer, but I haven't been able to. Sucks.

I play the '09 and love it. Haven't been hitting it well lately, but still like it. Probably due for an upgrade in another year or so.

I'm def due for an upgrade, but don't know if I Wana stick with the burner or try something new. I launch my tee shots very high. I'd like to lower the launch angle. Thinking about dropping to an 8.5 from a 9.5.

Have a pro at Golfsmith or Golfgalaxy check the shaft first. Driver loft is further down the line of things that effect trajectory.

I got fitted at a club. Generally stores will do all the work and then give you the hard sell, but you can take the info anywhere. There's really not a lot that goes into it - mostly what you're comfortable with (along with loft, length, shaft angle and a few other minute details) - but really any pro in a store can help. But if you go to a Golfsmith or Golfgalaxy, ask for one of the club makers to help.

Edit: Do NOT let the look of the club head sway you one way or another. I used to play a two-ball center-shafted putter, now I have a half-offset heel-shafted putter. Huge difference in look, but has worked wonders for me on the green.

The most important part of a club is the shaft. Anyone who says otherwise is trying to sell you something expensive and more likely not the right fit for your game.

Looking for some advice as a beginner if anyone doesn't mind sharing.

How did you learn the game/ get respectable at it?

This is my first year playing. I bought some decent irons for a beginner, Taylormade Burner X set, which I was told are "forgiving".

I did a 4 lesson package a few weeks ago where I got marginally better, but still more often than not, I am hitting grounders and line drives rather than getting loft on the ball.

Wondering if I should take more lessons this year, or... Hold off, work on what I learned, and what until next year to take up lessons again.

You only get better by playing. The more lessons, the merrier. I've been playing for 20 years (33 years old) and I still take a lesson when I can.

The #1 advice I can give is to slow down your swing speed. It's THE problem of 90% of beginners. Everyone wants to hit the ball 300 yards but it takes forever to get there. And you might never get there. The game is about accuracy, which I still have issues with, even after 20 years. If you're serious about playing, try to master one club a year. Start with the driver, then putter, then wedges, then irons. Something like 65% of shots are within 100 yards of the pin. You have to be able to get it out there, but finishing is most important (I know I contradicted myself with driver first, but it's the way I was taught).

When I go to the range, I mostly just hit my 7 iron. I take some shots with the driver, but I figure there is no chance I can hit the driver until I learn to hit my irons. I figure if I go twice a week to the range, it should help.

And yeah, I have definitely been told by a few people that I swing too fast...

7 iron is the ''easiest'' club to hit. Don't waste too much time on it just because you hit it well.

I've been playing for about 4 years. Down to an 8.7 handicap after my forced month long vacation. Just got the new R11S driver. its wonderful with all the adjusting you can do.
