When the Jets drafted defensive end Quinton Coples with the 16th overall pick in April, he was immediately dubbed a starter by coach Rex Ryan.

With the first week of training camp in the books, the Jets have moved Coples out of the starting lineup. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said that the team will use him in pass rushing situations for the time being after seeing his play slow down as a result of how much he’s trying to learn on the fly.

“We’ll work it from back to front,” Pettine said, via Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger. “He’ll be a third-down guy, similar to [Aaron] Maybin. Get him out there in passing situations and then work him into the base defense. Let him be a back-up for the guys in base, but keep his plate small.”

The move isn’t being sold as a demotion, as Pettine said Coples could still play between 50 and 80 percent of the snaps depending on the opposition. The idea is to have him do comfortable things first and then start feeding him more challenging things as the year goes along. It’s a similar approach to the one they took with 2010 first-round pick Muhammad Wilkerson, who is currently starting at defensive end with Mike DeVito taking the spot once reserved for Coples.

If Coples can help the Jets pass rush improve on last season’s results, there won’t be any complaints about keeping him in that role. If he doesn’t, though, the pre-draft doubts that helped someone of his athletic gifts drop to the 16th pick will crop up again.

No...He's a rookie. Everyone needs to relax. Better to do this than overload him, and his play/confidence suffer. Along with the media scrutiny

If Rex never anointed him the starter before the 1st practice, this would be a non-issue. Most rookie DL arent playing 100% of snaps anyway.

It's a non-issue regardless. He said he expects top picks to start, which everyone should. You don't draft a guy in the 1st for depth 3 years down the line.

But Ryan left little doubt about his hope for Coples; it's to start.

"Anytime you draft a guy that high ... that's why you have them here, obviously," he said.

Seriously, this is mostly on Rex for saying he was going to start. What he'll end up doing is exactly what you would expect and move to more and more snaps hopefully. Plus, he still has a lot of time to get it down.

50 to 80 percent of the plays doesn't sound too scaled back for a rookie. He just won't start when we're in the 3 4. Big deal. Most lineman don't play 100% of the snaps.

I hope Rex is learning to think before he speaks. Realize that nothing good comes from boasting or making premature predictions or statements.

The offense is snaping the ball at a 25 second pace. That's been something even for the veteran defenders to adjust too. A rookie in his first NFL camp is naturally going to read and react at a slower pace then the vets.

I don't think there's anything alarming about putting less on his plate at this time. And then add later on more responsibilities as Coples gets more acclimated to the speed of the NFL game.

He's trying (I guess). But you can't change your spots completely. Nothing good can come out of annointing Coples the starter the day after the draft - if anything, it just alienates DeVito. But its really hard for Rex to keep his mouth shut.

For the time being it's fine. The Jets don't need Coples to step in and start immediately. Last year they needed Muhammaed Wilkerson to come in and start. They had no better option at 34 DE. The Jets can play Calvin Pace, Bryan Thomas, Aaron Maybin and maybe even Wilkerson at end in the 43 on first and second down, with cloggers like Pouha, Dixon and DeVito at DT. In a 34 set, Coples obviously is not needed to be on the field. There are a lot of DL/OLB on this team and they'll all be mixed and matched.

pettine said this is normal. Dont waste him in the 3-4, save his energy for the pass rush when hes in.

This is only an issue b.c of how Rex handled it. I bet it didn't sit well with the veterans that he was anointed a starter without even putting pads on. Puts unneeded pressure on a young player.

Unfortunately, Coples is going to be even more scrutinized now. Giving ammunition to those who questioned his work-ethic. Not to mention that the media loved Ingram and he was available when we picked Coples.

Coples will be fine. Most rookie DL take a while to adjust to the pro game. Guys like Coples are used to dominating everyone they have ever faced and need to get used to the physicality of the pro game. It seems like his issue is with the 3-4 which is new to him so that is very understandable. He is probably a little overwhelmed, but things will slow down eventually.

I am very glad we have Dunbar to coach him through this. He will be fine.

Didn't we have a lot of fans citing Coples as the reason our D would go from top 10 to best in the league?

We have other capable veterans who can play though

Well, considering one of the main problems with the team last season and before was the pass rush, then if Coples can improve that, then yes, it could help.

No one will care if hes making a impact as a pass rusher. All they said was that he isn't starting on 3-4 packages anymore. He is starting on sub packages and 4-3 packages.
