Vrentas: Mark Sanchez testing out wristband in Tony Sparano's offense

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Friday night's preseason opener was the first time Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez wore a wristband as he ran Tony Sparano's new offense.

As Sanchez has steadily learned Sparano's new offense in the offseason and preseason, they preferred him not to have the crutch of a wristband. But at Cincinnati, they decided to try it out.

"I kind of didn't want to start with the binky," Sparano said, using the word for an infant pacifier. "I kind of wanted to start with the verbiage, keep throwing it at him and throwing it at him and letting him handle it that way.

And he kind of likes that."

Sparano says the calls are flying out of Sanchez's mouth now, and proudly noted that the two can finish each other's sentences.

They talked before the game, debating if Sanchez would use the wristband or not. Sanchez told Sparano he didn't really want to use it, but suggested trying it out to see how it would go.

"It helps in some situations, only in that rather than me give him the whole play, and him give the whole play, it helps that way," Sparano said. "Some people like to have the play the way I am giving it to them in practice, because when you get it that way instead of getting the number, you get the play in and it starts to draw a picture before you get into the huddle."

Sparano said he and Sanchez have not yet decided if Sanchez will wear the wristband during the season. The first-team offense only played 14 snaps against the Bengals, and did not game plan for their opponent, so Sparano said they might need a larger sample size before making that decision.

"That is a conversation he and I have not had yet about that," he said. "I think we need to go a little bit deeper into the game and play a few more snaps before that."

Sanchez will have the final word on whether or not he wears the wristband, Sparano said.

A LOT of good QB have used a wristband in the past it is nothing shame full. Sometimes even the best QB gets shaken up and needs it. Not sure if he still does but Romo had one as did Eli. McNabb refused to wear one in Washington saying it was a racist thing. That turn out good for him. Smith has been wearing one in SF.

Yeah Brady uses it a lot, big part of their offense. If it helps Sanchez let's give it a shot. It should give him more time to read the defense.

Mark, nobody cares if you need a wristband.

Just don't sh*t the bed.

Thanks.
