Web pranksters hijack Mountain Dew’s online crowdsourced naming effort for a new green-apple-flavored soda
Mountain Dew's new product needed a name. Internet trolls needed a new target to mock and harass. Here's how a big company 'lost to the Internet.'

BY PHILIP CAULFIELD / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Mountain Dew’s online soda naming contest produced a lot of 'winning' entries that were losers by any normal marketing guidelines.

Do the "diabeetus"?

Internet pranksters hijacked Mountain Dew's new soda naming contest by submitting a handful of tasteless suggestions, such as "moist nugget," "diabeetus," "gushing granny," and "fapple."

The soft-drink company had hoped to start some buzz about its forthcoming green apple-flavored beverage and launched a campaign asking Dew fans to submit clever titles at DubtheDew.com

Instead, users of the Internet message boards Reddit and 4chan spammed the site with silly suggestions, and a few off-color ones, according to several blogs.

The company quickly yanked DubtheDew.com. The site was still dead as of Tuesday.

In a Twitter post, the company told a Reuters editor the contest "lost to the Internet."

The company was running a similar crowdsourcing effort to name its new, non-alcoholic malt-flavored drink.

Suffice to say, they got Rick-rolled by the internet.

Reminds me of changing the marquee at the local drive-in!!!

I remember changing the Richard Pryor to Richards Gonads, before the employees caught wind and chased us out of the bushes!
