Mets Unlikely To Boost Payroll

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/0...t-payroll.html

Even though General Manager Sandy Alderson recently said that a formal budget has not been set for 2013, the Mets are likely to keep their payroll at just north of $90MM, a source told Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com. The source speculated that Alderson will have no more than $10-15MM to spend this winter despite the money coming off of the books this year.

If the Mets choose to non-tender Andres Torres, they would have roughly $17.8MM freed up, though they will also need to find outfield help and retool the bullpen. They'll also see a lot of that money go to scheduled pay raises while Johan Santana and Jason Bay will earn a combined $10MM more next season including their 2014 buyouts. Pay raises include Jonathon Niese ($2.23MM), David Wright ($1MM), Frank Francisco ($1MM), and R.A. Dickey ($750K) while Daniel Murphy, Ike Davis, Bobby Parnell and Josh Thole all figure to be arb-eligible.

A team official did not rule out the possibility of Alderson backloading new free agent deals to circumvent short-term limitations, but also pointed out that Alderson is cautious when it comes to long-term contracts. The Mets could allow themselves to venture into longer-term deals as they have no payroll commitments for 2014 beyond Niese's deal.

I said it at mid season Wright is likely gone. They will likely get a kings ransom in a trade. 3rd base is at a premium right now. They could go to Boston or the Yanks right now and pretty much take what ever they want. Boston has a lot of good young bats. I'd ask for Ryan Kalish, Josh Reddick, Jose Iglesias, and Oscar Tejada and see if Boston bites. Also if Texas doesn't get Josh back they will be desperate for talent. They have a LOT of FA this year. I really think the METS will just be naming their price and that is too much to pass up on. They will sell tickets so that is not a real issue.

Dickey I would just trade while his stock is as high as it is going to get. He is anther one you can sell and pull away with a high pitching prospect. or maybe one of those guys above if Boston doesn't want Wright. I'd take Reddick for Dickey and 2 other minor prospects easy. Reddick would do well in RF here.

Out side of that the only guy I think you have to worry about is Davis in arb. Niece you can run with one more year and Bobby Parnell and Josh Thole aren't getting much even if they do get arb.

He's a knuckler, so they last a bit longer. You are correct, but I think he's got a few years left because his head is screwed on right as well.

We'll see.

Josh Reddick? He was traded to Oakland in the offseason for Andrew Bailey.

Not even close. Wang is a good owner who is in an impossible situation. He has been hemorrhaging money for years in that dump. Can't blame him for everything. Long Island (mainly Nassau) is corrupt and ass backwards and it is getting worse.

And the Red Sox have Middlebrooks, a good young 3B prospect.

IMHO this would be a really stoopid move. But that is why the Mets will probably do it.

Wright is the Mets all-time leader in Hits, RBIs, Runs, Doubles, BBs and he is #3 in HR's (53 behind Strawberry).

CORRECTION:

Wright is 30 hits shy of being the all-time hits leader

What has to be understood when talking about Wright is the METS aren't winning a WS in the next few year. This isn't a small market team thou so they can and likely should plan to win 3-4 years from now. Holding onto Wright doesn't help them in that perspective. Last year of his deal coming up and they just can't resign him. There is actually no reason to keep him for one more year. He is not coming back it is a sad but true reality. They just don't have the money to do it. If they can get a future OF and one or two other starters out of the deal it should be a no brainier. Then when they are ready to dip back into the market they don't have to fill every spot. If they don't trade Wright in the off season I'll actually be shocked. It would be gross miss management IMO.

They have about 5 million a year on the books for 2014 and beyond in Niese plus a couple buyouts for Santana and Bay. There is no reason NOT to resign Wright and Dickey. If you don't you might as well close up shop because the fans will never forgive that.

They're a small market team, now. They behave like one and it doesn't look to get better any time soon.

Wright might not want to come back. He'll get big money from someone, why come back to the Mets?

Because the Mets are in NY and he will be the greatest hitter in NY Mets history. He will be talked about by Met fans for the next 50 years.
