The myth that Brick played bad vs the Giants

I just watched every snap of his vs the Giants because its a somewhat popular thing to say that Brick has looked awful this preseason. But from what I saw, he had only a couple questionable plays. And you have to take into account that the OL is playing against elite pass rushers.

The one play where people say Brick got beat was on that Wayne Hunter play where JPP forced Hunter into a complete 360 spin. IMO Brick did what hes supposed to do with riding him out, Hunter f'd up.

The sack that Brick gave up, I think that Sanchez held onto the ball too long. Hunter got beat pretty quickly, Sanchez moved up and he didn't see anyone and got sacked.

That was it, the rest of the time he was walling guys off and even looked solid run blocking for the most part.

The problem with our OL from what I saw was Wayne Hunter being a huge liability at RT, run blocking and obviously pass protection. And our lack of a blocking TE, Jeff Cumberland got destroyed.
Those short yardage situations that we didn't get, it looked like Hunter and Cumberland being to blame, Hunter missed a block and Cumberland just gets ran over he so bad.

Overall our OL might not be as bad as people think, as long as our RT doesn't play as bad as Hunter has and we can get a decent blocking TE.

+1 people are all over brick because he had a bad year last year. Let's not forget that he has been one of the best pass protectors in the NFL for years.

With the Hunter/Howard switch placating us, now the TE issue suddenly moves to the front of the deck.

I wonder what the Jets are going to do - if anything. Agree that Cumberland looked way overmatched on the running plays - really no one looked good.

I don't know if I am making too much of it, but it seems like with the Jets running game, they're certainly built to depend on a blocking TE as part of the action. Who know - maybe we're going to see tons of Wayne Hunter out there on the end . . .

This Carolina game is going to be interesting.

Maybe Brick did it on purpose. Perhaps jealous that he wasn't assigned the role of trojan horse.

Brick is fine he just looked pretty bad game 1 the whole line did for a plethora of reasons. He was injured part of last year and played threw it. He is still a pro bowl player and will show it come game time. People like to blame the whole line because Sanchez needs 8 sec every play to get the ball off. I'm shocked there isn't a whole thread on how we need a new C too. Some people are just ridiculous.

I say cut them both & start rebuilding the team with Tebow as our #1 QB & switch Paul Gornick to starting Center. (-;

On the third and 1 run by Greene, it was the entire right hand side of the line, PLUS Slauson, Powell and and extra TE for good measure. They got no push at all and didn't open up any holes. 4 Giants basically stood the 6 of them up.

On the 4th and 1 by Conner, it was Moore (or whomever was in at RG) that got beat. He got turned inside and then run over.

The man who missed that assignment and went down field to block someone else (who?) goes by the name "Hunter".

When pressure comes from the blind side a QB typically slides to the right to avoid pressure

Watch any right handed QB. Even if there isn't pressure, if they have to hold onto the ball a little bit longer they slide to the right.

The problem with the Jets is that our right side is supposed to be held in check by this guy...

Have to disagree with you on that one. Jet's lined up with a 7 man line (2 TEs). Giants had 2 DL in 1 tech, right DE was 5 tech and left DE was 7.

Play was designed to go to the left. Can't see the numbers very well, but at the snap, Mangold and whomever was at LG took the right DT and put him down. Moore was supposed to put the left DT down. Nothing fancy, just pin him to the pile that Mangold and the RG made and don't let him through. Brick and Hunter BOTH went down field to take on the LBs, either of which were in position to stop Connor. Cumberland didn't help matters as he let the right DE come down and get in on the play.

Hunter was slow getting down field to the LB and you'd have to be charitable to call what he did "blocking" as the LB did end up finishing Connor off, but the play was dead once Moore got turned and run over.

While moore did get beat, if hunter had simply pushed the DT that beat moore even a little bit, it would have been a first down. We only needed one yard, going "downfield" to get a LB is not what he needed to do....seal the DT first then look at the LB.

Yep. All you have to do is watch the film.

Film doesn't lie.

Brick needs to step it up this year. He gets the benefit of the doubt for last year b.c he played very well in the previous 2 years. #4 overall pick and he is paid like a franchise LT. Franchise LTs don't have down years. 2012 is a big year for him.
