I think you mean the 2nd & 6 final play of the half?

There was nobody within a 10-yard radius except the Panther CB.

Greene had 3 yards of separation to work with, lowered his shoulder and ran straight into him ... one yard shy of the marker.

Yeah, that pissed me off. Always the lazy way out with him.

He has dropped a few before, but everyone is acting like he couldn't catch a ball to save his life. we'll see but to say he adds nothing in the passing game probably isn't correct. I think he'd get an incomplete thus far. he has never been a full-time back in the passing game.
Greene's true value is when during later in the game, the defense gets tired and Greene becomes a major force.

McKnight should start, Greene should be used the same as Lamont Jordan was used..... As a back that would come in when the D was tired. Jordan had more talent than Greene and was never successful when he started for raiders.

Also, this talk about Greene being successful if there were holes... Like someone said earlier any average NFL RB can run through a hole. Its when a RB has no holes or small holes and still makes things happen that make a good running back. Green has no moves, he is big and slow but he does run straight and hard which makes him a short yardage RB. Hes also a terrible pass catcher. No way should this one dimensional RB be a starter in the NFL. RT is the biggest weakness on the team and RB is second.

His success returning kickoffs deserves a shot at RB. You don't know until you try.... And he did have a great game at RB vs BUF 2 years ago in season finale.

Greene should get 5 - 10 carries all in the second half,
we need to mix Teb. MKnight Powell - and maybe a
waiver guy into the mix

New Orleans runs a sophisticated multi-back screen
oriented offense, as do all successful programs,
I'm startingto think Tony is overmatched as an OC, what exactly
has he done as an OC anyway?

Shonn Greene

I loved Shonn Greene his rookie year, especially in the playoffs, and I respect his heart, because I think he was playing hurt last year. However, I truly believe he's one of the worst running backs in the nfl. He never makes anyone miss, he has no speed, no cutting ability and no vision. I think Powell or McKnight would both be upgrades, as would pretty much any 2nd string nfl rb.

Shonn Greene is not the worst RB in the league, he is just not a flashy RB. He is a downhill runner, he's not gonna go east and west he's gonna come out you and run you over, sometimes breaking a tackle and most times falling forward for that extra yard or 2. I believe Powell with get a lot more carries this year and it seems like Joe Mcknight will just be KR/PR specialist as well as someone they can use in the backfield, although I do agree he should be used more because he gives a change of pace in the backfield that Powell doesn't provide. Shonn Green is more of a complimentary back, the guy in the 4th quarter that can run through tired arm tackles. I don't think he's the guy who can carry the ball for 4 qts. In today NFL a carousel of RB's isn't uncommon, You will see Shonn sharing a lot of the carries this yr.

well when there's no holes to run through what do you expect. Greene had a nice rookie year because he had holes the size of the grand canyon to run through. now it's like he's running straight head on into a concrete wall. i don't know many running backs that can could do anything with what the line is giving him

I really want to see more McKnight in the running game on 1st and 2nd downs run some sweeps or screens and get him out in space. He's so damn good in the return game in space it really baffles me why he's not a part of our offense...

Greene was hurt his rookie year, didn't play until
the end of the season, and was only used in the
second half of games.

That formula worked, because he was fresh
off the bench, and had most of the season
off.

I wish the Jets would realize that Greene is
a closer, not an every down back.

That's another thing, Shonn did really well in the '09 playoffs until he removed himself midway thru the biggest game - the AFCC - over a minor chest discomfort and the Jets scored nothing the second half.

Guess he assumed the AFCC was something that comes around often.

OMG You're kiddin, right? Ever try to do anything with bruised ribs num nuts? It hurts to just breath.
Our morinic coach lost that game by trying to sit on a lead. Giving the ball to Thomas 2yrds instead of attacking when we had Manning down.
Blame Rex, not Greene.

The Shonn Greene you see in the video above, shows you why he was deserving of the Doak Walker Award, as College's best RB. He could smash mouth a defender. or use spin moves and lateral agility, to keep a run alive, until he could find a crease to run through. Greene was an exciting runner at Iowa.

But this is not the Shonn Greene that the Jets inherited. And I believe more then anything else, that this has to do with the size of his hands. They are something like 7.7 - 7.9 inches. Probably the smallest pair of hands on any offensive skill player in the NFL. If you were to put Shonn's palm and place it next to the palm of Sanchez' 10.5" hands...they look like the hands of a little boy.

The aggressive running style that earned Greene that Doak Walker Award in college, would only make him a fumbling machine on the NFL level. 3 fumbles on just 108 carries in 2009. And in the very first game in 2010 against the Ravens...two quick fumbles in the early part of that game. Those tiny hands were the reason. His Doak Walker days were over. The talents of NFL defenders, and their tackling techniques, were far superior then what Greene faced on the college level.

For the sake of ball security, Greene has become a one dimensional downhill runner. That's why he didn't fumble last year. He's had to make adjustments to his running style, to compensate for the fact that his small hands makes him vulnerable to fumbling.

Anyhow...that's how I view what's happened to Shonn Greene.

The comments from Hodge yesterday, (im not talking about tebow as a RB - simply to keep the thread on topic) were pretty on point. He stressed that the Jets line is not getting to the second level which is allowing LBs to fill easier then we did in 2009-10.

He specifically mentioned how we repeatedly ran behind moore and woody that year and that no one could stop that play. Now obviously we are missing woody and moore is up there in age, but also, as much as i like him as a value player, slauson isnt very athletic, which seems to indicate hodge is right. If 3 of our lineman LG, RG, and RT are not that fast/athletic to get out to the second level, of course its gonna be harder for greene to break 7-10 yard runs.

Anyway....I hope howard makes a difference in the running game, and we can actually use hill/the passing offense to force the defense to at least not play downhill all game.

If we can somehow get the passing game going it will help Greene.

He'LL never be great. But teams stack the line, bunch up close and dare us to throw downfield. Last year we hardly tossed the ball downfield. There wasn't much room for him to run and he still got his 1000. He's an average back that can really succeed if the offense was more balanced.

Get the passing game going, back defenders off the line and smash em in the mouth with Greene. At least this is the best we can hope for right now until the Jets draft or sign a real #1.
