Utah Affiliate Axes Gay-Themed NBC Sitcom

Quote:
http://www.newser.com/story/152903/u...bc-sitcom.html

A Mormon Church-owned NBC affiliate won't be airing the network's new show about a gay couple because it's "excessively rude and crude," Gawker reports. The New Normal, which tells the story of the couple having a child through a surrogate, "feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time," says Salt Lake City's KSL-TV. New Normal star Ellen Barkin blasts the move as "blatantly homophobic," tweeting: "So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?"

Programming issues aside....how does a tax-exempt church "own" a TV affiliate and is the ad revenue they collect also tax-exempt?

How do obviously partisan groups get tax excempt protection whilst effectively running a non-stop, permanenet, endless campiagn for one side of the two-party system?

I don't know either, but thats our tax code.

Up to me, tax-excemption would be eliminated universally.

To my knowledge, the income generated by the tv channel would most likely be considered either Unrelated Business Taxable Income (UBTI) or Effectively COnnected Income (ECI) and taxed accordingly.

Ask southpark though, he is a better accountant that myself

Such a shame. I'm sure this show would've garnered huge ratings in that market.

If they want to break new ground, why not bare female breasts? No one wants to see gay dudes.

Not sure about the tax exempt status (I doubt it, unless it's operated as a non-profit), but there's no reason a religious organization can't own a media property. Separation of church and state, not of church and commerce.

Beyond that, as a privately owned station, they are free to make whatever decisions they want, so long as they are allowed to by their contract with NBC

ha ha ha; that brings to mind Chris Rock's line about the OJ Verdict: white people were mad; I haven'[t seen that many angry white people since they cancelled M*A*S*H.
