Let me get this straight

#1. 2/9/12 Jets guarantee Wayne Hunter's 2012 contract. So basically we panic or are stupid enough to guarantee Hunter's contract for more than he is worth. A prudent team would have made it a point to address this spot in the draft.

#2. 3/12/12 Texans cut Eric Winston

#3. 3/17/12 Chiefs sign Eric Winston. 2012 cap hit=three million dollars.

#4. 4/26/12-4/28/12 Ignore offensive line in draft

#5. 8/18/12 Hunter becomes whipping boy, again.

#6. 8/27/12 Jets compound their mistake by shipping Hunter to the Rams for an awful tackle with concussion history. Pay an extra 1.55 million.

#7. 8/28/12 Realize that our new backup tackle makes $451,000 less than Ferguson this year. Realize that Smith+Tebow's cap hits equal 6,572,500 which is 3,572,500 more than Winston would make this year and just shy of the 7 million he's due next year. Realize that the difference between Hunter and Smith's contracts would have paid for Austin Howard's 1.3 million tender for next year.

#8. 8/29/12 Pray that Austin Howard can handle the pressures and situations of a real game.

not exactly a great, smooth ride there. but from a GM or coach standpoint, I can see why they stuck with Hunter. They saw Hunter flash some really good things (we all did) when filling in for Woody. They gave him the extension and he flopped in his first year as a starter. But all I ever heard anyone say was how athletic Hunter was and good he can be, so first they blame his poor season on the scheme.

With a new OL coach and coordinator, they figure they'd give him another shot to see if in fact it was the scheme. We find out it wasn't, but too late. These NFL coaches/GMs have tremendous egos, they think they can fix anyone and they don't want to admit a signing was a failure. Now the Rams think they can fix Hunter and the Jets think they can fix Smith. Change of scenery for both guys, hey sometimes they say it's a good thing. hope so

Not to mention the fact that Winston is not the second coming of Anthony Munoz and that we really don't know if he would have taken a deal with the Jets... all this focus on one jag only shows how slim the pickings were...

Slim pickings or not, this shows shot sightedness by the front office.

hey, schit happens. you simply can't look into the hindsight crystal ball and criticise too much. hunter was given a chance and it didn't work. howard looks like he'll be okay and we still don't know how ducasse will be on game days. and don't forget that salaries are misleading. d'brick's salary may be low but he was paid very handsomely up front when he resigned.

Agreed

This offseason has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride as far as the RT spot. But the bottom line is when the season actually starts, do we have at least an average starter there. Because that would be a big upgrade over Hunter last season. Howard might be that guy. And did we add some veteran OT depth. If Tannenbaum achieved that, then he's succeeded.

Who knows what Tim Tebow will do for this offense until they show us what they plan for him.

Eric Winston is damaged goods, and who actually knows whether or not we made a run at him?

Let this thing play out before you get a heart attack

1. there was a market for wayne hunter there as you can see the rams taking a shot on him as a backup and i am sure there were other teams out there as well the jets tried to coach him up to bad confidence is all gone good luck in st louis he was never a bad guy here

2. eric winston is very overated becuase of his nfl radio apperances and them fawning all over him solid run blocker avg pass blocker way over paid Why did you think the texans cut him they know there own players best you would think so why would we break the bank for him good pass by tanny

3 riely reiff and his short arm instead of coples who looks like a beast i think we made the right call much eaiser to find ol talent thats solid anywhere this howard kid did way beter than i though all game against a quality pass rusher early problem may be solved

4. hunter is done in ny so wise move getting him out of town

5. hunter did nothing to not deserve the whipping he got

6. a 1.5 mil flyer on a talented body hmmm lets see the pats did that 4 times this off season jim fainnne dt gone 3.5 mil signing bonus thats what good teams do they take calculated risks with cap space sometimes it works sometimes not not giving up a draft pick is a home run the guy is just cap space if he cant play if he comes in and is better than hunter its a home run.

7. eric winston was just not worth that much money plain and simple and the texans agree

8 i agree here if this howard kid is solid all year and right tackle is solved for years to come then we can work on replacing brandon next year he looks close to being done he can hardly bend any more

I just can't figure out why they ever guaranteed his contract to begin with. They could have kept him for the league minimum or a bit more based on his atrocious play. Made no sense to me at the time and makes no sense now.

BTW Hunter has actually played worse this pre season than he did last year.

Hunter and Eric Smith were the two players most Jet fans were saying that needed to go. Well Hunter is gone, and now it will be interesting to see what happens with Smith. Are the Jets going to carry 5 safeties? Right now Bell, Landry are starting, if they keep Smith does that mean that Allen or Bush are going to be cut?

Cut by the Texans; offered to be the highest paid RT in the NFL by Scott Pioli. You think the Jets should have somehow leaped in and trumped this offer? Winston never left the building in KC to go on his scheduled visits. It was a done deal. But in Madden world every player is available to the Jets. They just have to wave their hand and say hi...

I really think they believed he had a confidence issue. Maybe guaranteeing the contract was their way of showing faith in him. Didn't work, but as others have said, calculated risk . . .

Can't guarantee a contract to boost confidence. NFL is a serious business. Take a tougher approach, force the guy to play better rather than guaranteeing a contract so he knows he is paid even if he sucks. Bill Parcels would never go for that type of crap.

Sanchez's new contract was different, Jets got him for cheap the next two years and there's a reasonable expectation that he will have a good year this and next.

As CMart had pointed out one day, when the Jets decided to keep Hunter back in February it made his contract guaranteed at that point. You can argue whether they should have kept him, or why a stipulation like that was in the contract at all, but the Jets DID NOT have Hunter on the roster with NO guaranteed money and decided to make it guaranteed for the heck of it.
