Sean Jones?

Lions cut Sean Jones (who they just signed this offseason). He was a pretty good safety a few years ago, and is only 30. I'd take him over Eric Smith (and cutting Smith would clear 2M in cap room).

Why not just cut Smith and use the 2 million elsewhere? Jets have 5 safeties that could potentially be on the roster right now.

I think Eric Smith is a valuable asset in the role he will have this year...third or fourth safety and special teams contributor

Because those safeties are:

Landry - potential beast but injury concerns mean you need a legitimate backup
Bell - looks good but an older player, so injuries/wear and tear have to be a concern
Smith - injured, not particularly great but a decent third safety
Bush - rookie late round pick, looks decent in coverage
Allen - rookie late round pick who has flashed but is still mostly lost in coverage

Cut smith and go with just Landry, Bell, Bush and Allen, and you are backing up two injury risks with rookies who have significant holes in their games and would benefit from more development time before being asked to play major roles in the defense.

Sean Jones - Older and who looked so lost he was a early cut by the Lions.

How many safeties are you going to carry on the team though? Smith isnt even healthy right now and will probably miss the opener as well.
