What am I missing here?

All the commentary I see, hear and read about the Jets focuses on how bad the offense is going to be this year. Most of this seems to be based on what happened in the first three pre-season games - games that have historically proven to be meaningless, and in which most of the main receiving corps barely played.

Last year, the Jets scored 377 points, thirteenth in the league - not great, but above average. Which players are missing from that offense? Burress, who couldn't get any separation and failed to draw double-teams (and can't get a job with another team this year). Wayne Hunter? (No comment). LT? He was obviously on his last legs. Matthew Mulligan? (I think I'll just stop here).

We have a new OC, a new wildcat specialist to fill the void left by Brad Smith, and a starting QB who is in better shape and is playing with a chip on his shoulder.

The offense won't lead the league, but for a team with an elite defense, it should be good enough.

It's a good point. Throw into those 13th-spot rankings the terrible trio of games the Jets played in the first few weeks and the last few weeks.

I still think the Jets offense is very clearly a work-in-progress but as you note the defense has a chance to be elite.

In general teams have moved more and more away from the run; the Jets could have a front finally that forces teams into being fairly one-dimensional by relying on the downfield pass. And, as we all know we've got a defensive backfield that is pretty effective in most matchups against pass-heavy teams.

If we get that vaunted pressure up the middle and get some more ballhawking plays from our safeties - two things we DID see this preseason - then suddenly the texture of Jets games could be vastly different than it's been in any year yet under Ryan.

Plax annoyed me as much as anyone but he was a beast in the redzone. Add him to the 2010 team as a 4th WR used inside the 20 and that offense would have been excellent. Necessary cutting ties but pretty big loss I think.

P Burress maybe couldn't get any seperation from 20-20 but he still was very effective redzone weapon last year( 8 tds is nothing to dismiss) His play in the redzone was a big factor in Jets having the number 1 redzone offense.

So far in the preseason not having Plaxico Burress has hurt their ability to score Td's.
Have to see if they can rectify this situation when the regular season starts.

It's a new OC and the fact they are taking baby steps to implement the system in the preseason. If we are not scoring by the 3rd game, then worry.

Only thing I'll say is that while Plax was useless between the 20s, he was money in the redzone.

But for him to be money, sanchez had to get him the ball. I don't remember plax making any spectacular catches for TD's

Plax's effectiveness in the red zone has been tremendously overstated. I was listening to Matt Williamson (who has a generally negative take on the Jets) and he said that Plax was one of the league leaders in red zone targets last year. He said that his 8 TDs were far less impressive in that context, as the Jets force-fed him the ball in that area of the field and any decent receiver would have produced similar results if given the same number of opportunities.

So I'll continue to give the credit for last year's red zone success to Tom Moore, not Plax.

Enough with place 8 tds. He had 4 vs San Diego and 4 in 15 other games. He was a chump and waste of time.

Exactly my sentiments. The media has their own agenda and most of the people on this board buy in. Can we just play a game with actual starters. I just don't get why so many people buy in to the media - the truth rarely sells papers so they sensationalize to sell them.

+1

People (even the coaches) want to believe he's a great redzone threat because he's 6'5". I don't think he's any better of a redzone threat than Braylon Edwards. The two times to Jets chucked the ball up to Edwards in the redzone in 2010, he came down with it. For some reason, they never went back to it.

I'm not worried about our offense. It wont be top 10, but as long as we're 15-20 with the defense we'll be putting on the field, the Jets are a playoff team.

It's about time of possession. They need to be able to sustain drives, so the defense isn't on the field every 90 seconds. No matter how good the defense is, if they're always on the field, they will give points up.

... hoping for a qb controversy has the media in a frenzy ...

... do not fear, sanchez looks like he's taking steps in the right direction ... and now having hunter removed from RT will increase marks chance to make plays exponentially! ...

... buress did play well in redzone for us and certainly helped with that point total ... i'm looking forward to improved td/int-fumble ratio this year & having that translate to W-L's ...

The frustration doesn't come from the attempted media panic or the preseason ineptitude but rather that it seems we haven't made any strides forward on offense from last year. It's like we sit there and can plainly see that we don't possess the ball enough or score enough and Jets management is watching a completely different game.

For the first half of last season, Burress and Tomlinson helped get us the best redzone distinction in the league. Yes, they tired late in the year, but for the first 6-8 games they were invaluable to our ability to move the ball. This year, there are no replacements for them. Hill hasn't shown anything and McKnight doesn't appear to be the answer.

The OL looks bad even with the departure of Hunter, nothing you can be comfortable with yet.

We have 1 TE and he just can't get open and can't perform consistently.

Shonn Greene inspired no one last year.

Schottenheimer's departure was only supposed to be half the story; the rest was supposed to be adding impressive new talent and that just hasn't happened.

And while I'm a huge Sanchez fan I just don't see how he can flourish with the lack of talent around him. The Tebow thing I don't care about, but yes I can see how it can be a distraction to him.

As has been the story for the past three seasons, we see the defense dominate and the offense not keep up its part of the deal. Right now, looks like more of same to us, not very enthusiastic about our chances of winning games 13-10 every week and disappointed that it's come to this again.

In that 2-3 Jets start of last season...they had Mason in the slot, and Plax out wide, as the vertical threat replacement for Braylon. Neither were effective in their roles. And the secondary was able to focus more on Holmes and Keller...making them less effective.

This year Kerley starts in the slot. And between Hill-Schilens-Gates, the Jets can at least put a player opposite Holmes, that is a vertical threat. Simply due to the fact, that all three possess blazing speed, and can actually run go routes. Something Plax, or any of the rest of last year's WRs unit, couldn't do.

This should benefit Holmes and Keller, running routes more effectively, in the short-intermediate areas of the field. And if the box is less stacked...this should benefit the run game too.

Last year...Wayne Hunter was the 3rd or 4th worst RT in the league. If Austin Howard...by himself...or in combination with Jason Smith, can play at an adequate-serviceable level. Then that should result in close to halving the number of negative plays, that Hunter produced.

Same goes for Brick...he should be able to bounce back from last year, to playing his usual game.

Sanchez is playing in a Sparano system, that should be better suited to his strengths...rather then forced to operate the offense under Schotty's playbook. And as a result...Sanchez has looked better this TC-preseason. Looks more poised and ready to move forward in his development...to a higher level.

If Sanchez can run a low turnover and more efficient offense(like the 49ers did)...then the Jets will have a good chance to win just about every game. And I think that can result in 10 wins...or maybe 11. Because...

The Jets defense is poised to have perhaps its best season under Rex. With Landry and Bell, the two new starting safeties...to combine with Revis-Cro-Wilson-Lankster...this secondary could potentially be the best in the league.

So if MoWilk-Coples-Kenrick-Maybin-Demario Davis-Pace-Scott-Etc...can effectively pressure the QB, with four DL, mixed in with various sub packages...then this should result in more turnovers. Both from the rush, and from the secondary units.

Preseason hysteria aside...this team should play better then last year. How much better...we'll find out pretty soon.

This team needs a weapon on O. It doesn't have one. It has a group of VERY average guys at the skill/scoring positions. There's no Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Arian Foster or MJD here....not even close! There isn't a single player that scares a defensive coordinator. The only differentiator on the Jets is the yet-to-be-seen Wildcat with Tebow.

If you want to know how most people perceive the Jets offensive "playmakers" then participate in a Fantasy Football draft. Not a single Jet is taken until people start sniffing around Shonn Greene somewhere in Rounds 5 or 6. In a 12 team, 15 round draft yesterday I only saw Greene and Holmes taken. I may pickup Keller as a backup TE off waivers.

That's just plain wrong. There are no average WRs on the team. They're all raw, but all have very rare, size, and abilities. Can they catch? Can they run a proper route? Can they improve? Those are good questions, but average they are not.
