I got off the Verrizano and onto the Belt at 4:10pm yesterday. I didn't get home until 6 - I live in western Nassau. Listen to what others have said and take the LIRR to Jamaica and get the AirTrain.

Is there anything worse...than that glance to the right.... towards the belt.... as you merge left for the exit....and all you see is tailights as far as the eye can see.

I get chills.

Let me echo what others have said here. TAKE THE GODDAMNTRAIN.

I live in Manhattan and will NEVER drive/take a car to JFK on a Friday afternoon. Factor in the rain and its even worse. Now, factor in coming through the Lincoln Tunnel and you have yourself literally the worst drive in the world. There is no good time for you to leave.

Thinking of going through Staten Island? Are you crazy?

Do yourself a favor, take NJT to Penn Station, take the LIRR to Jamaica and jump on the Air Train. I don't care if you are traveling with a fuking cello - take the train.

Or leave at 11am.

FYI I live ON the Lincoln Tunnel, literally. It's not a far drive for us to get into the city, so that's a good start.

I know that approach. Friday at 4pm in the rain, you'll get into Manhattan around 5:15.

I hear you man. We are going to deal with what we have, we miss the flight, we miss the flight.

Anyone have any ALTERNATE routes they want to recommend OTHER THAN the train?

I drove taxis out of Port Washington during college; I knew all the back roads, fancy approaches etc, in and out of LGA and JFK. Take the damn train.

I used to commute from Somerset county NJ to the FAA building at JFK on a daily basis for months because my company would not let me fire incompetent workers. Rain will significantly delay your travel. I once left the office at 4pm and got home at 10. It is one of the worst commutes on the planet.

So after reading the responses in this thread, if you haven't already left you basically southsided yourself.

Where were you flying to? I'm sure it's no nicer than NJ in October.

I'm in Jersey, let me help you. Have the GF come to my place to change and then I'll drive her to Weehawken, should save you 20 minutes. I am recovering from hernia surgery and have a drooping testicle so no worries about any funny business.

Either you want to make your flight or you don't. Take the freakin' train. Its the only way you'll make it. Why put yourself through the stress of sitting in traffic that's hardly moving?

Wait; people are taking vacations OUTSIDE of Jersey?

Say it isn't so.
