Technically its almost the same thing, since you're just running your car, and then running that power to select appliances in the house. Anyone?

Bueller?
I had a friend who traveled quite a bit and lived in NH. He put in a battery bank and power inverter that was kept charged from the grid when power was on and would provide power to feed the water pump, fridge, and some lights in the event of a power outage so his wife wouldn't panic. Worked pretty good when he needed it. It's a short term solution (a few days at best).

Just use your wireless network and portable laptop computer. No electricity needed.

I did last year, got one in the electronics section at Home Depot at the last minute and used it for lights with those energy efficient bulbs, worked fine, not sure what appliances would run off it though.

Had a smaller one years ago (350 watts) to run a wood pellet stove. To run appliances you'll need quite a beefy one (guessing 1500 watts for one appliance). Then again newer appliances are more efficient. To get a more capable inverter I'm guessing the cost might get you in the ballpark of a small generator. It's been awhile since I priced them though.

Yeah it's probably not worth it, really. If I start getting internet withdrawals we'll pile into my car and and invade my sister's generator-enabled home.

If the main concern is internet withdrawal wouldn't your cell phone cover you there? Assuming you have a smart phone and it's charged you should be set. And even if it runs out if you have a ciggy adapter you can charge it in the car.

Not sure I have any candles to read by tho.

Have to check on that tomorrow.

So far it looks like DC is the projected landfall. As I'm currently working for a co that does contract ork for the feds. I'm thinking I'll have at least one day off next week.

RE histories I could read over and over and never get bored. ..ancient Rome, WW2, US Civil War, Russian Revolution, French Revolution are among my favorites.

Ran out and filled ten gallons of gas containers...re-started my generator (20 minutes of pulling)....ran that for half an hour...got some water, milk, bread, topped off the cars... ice...etc...

Still wired thinking about it...(I worry about stuff) cant sleep.

Scheduled to take 3 kids to the Jet/Miami game Sunday....

I feel I've done what I can do...which for a worrier..is cool.

My fiancée is really worried and is insisting we should stock up on supplies. I said, ahhh, what are you worried about? We have cereal, we have duraflame logs for the fireplace. No big deal.

The hampur is full of so many comedians, the potential jokes line up like a scroll down menu every time I type set up lines like that. I actually knew that was coming. (scroll down just popped on that sentence, too.)
