Yes. It will work. You may have to light it manually and the blower motor won't work.

The responses in this thread from the clueless is very lol worthy.

How far away from the gas fireplace do you plan to sit?

Ignore all other advice from this thread. Especially any advice that refutes this post.

And kids, do not try this at home unless you own a BMW.
Thanks, Potato.

I just did this and there is an odor like you said. We're all beat from the storm prep and we're going to bed.

Thanks to all who responded.

The fireplace draws the room air out via convection up the chimney. So you need a raging fire to actually heat.

Might want to supplement the duraflame logs with some Presto Logs or real wood.

As for Sar I if your gas fire place has a pilot light constantly burning, then you should be good to go during a power outage, of course minus the fan that helps to push the heat out into the room
I have a real fire place and a duraflame log will heat half my living room fairly well. It is just after a few hrs it does start to draw heat. So you need to feed it ever 4 hrs. Fell asleep once in the middle of winter with it going woke up 6hrs later it was like 45 deg in my house and the fire was still going. lol Reg wood isn't any better IMO. Burns way too quick.

That's great, not all fire places are created equal.

Might not be so easy for a novice, some of the newer gas F/P"s have sealed combustion chambers.
That means you would have to remove any decorative trim and release the clasps that hold the glass, remove the glass, then try and light the pilot and reassemble before the full flame kicks on. Could be wrong on this cause I have never tried to force light a sealed combustion gas Fire Place. Does not sound like a family friendly project.

So for the thousands of years humans have been heating their abodes with fireplaces they were actually making themselves colder than if they had no fire?

There's lots of factors that goes into how fast natural wood will burn. Age, hard woods vs soft woods (yeah I went there) moisture content, etc.

Your results may differ, I did say typically, and I am certain that duraflame logs are a rather new invention.
You can heat your home with a fireplace, typically it requires a large raging fire to do so, this is why the Franklin stove was such a game changer.

A small fire would do fine if you had a Rumford fireplace.
