I don't think that's accurate. I think the governments (NY/NJ/CT/PA), etc. have established that the storm was not at a hurricane level, so hurricane deductibles do not apply, but I'm not sure that a government can sign an order that unilaterally changes a contract entered into by private individuals/entities.

The insurance contract speaks for itself. What changes are the specific conditions that trigger specific obligations.

In the end, there will be nothing "small-scale" about it. Sandy will have done more damage than Katrina. Early estimates say $55 Billion (Katrina was $108 Billion). I'm guessing the Sandy Est. will rise substantially when all is said and done.

Tack on indirect costs, like lost productivity of most of the East Coast for two days, and many places for quite longer vs. New Orleans, and Sandy will have become the single costliest storm in U.S. history in every way but deaths.

I agree, Fish. I only used that term in deference to the amount killed in Katrina compared to SI.

Unfortunately I am hearing the death toll is possibly going to increase significantly. A local school is allegedly being utilized as a makeshift morgue (never a good thing) and that families were not initially reported as missing, reason being there was no one left to report them. Hopefully those who told me this are completely wrong.

Aye, it's sounding better. Talked to Mom (in Ireland) and she told me she's got some emails saying everyone is ok. So till some details can come out I'm not going to worry too much.

This story is the one that has received the most attention locally, rightfully so. Sadly, it has ended in a (predictably) sad way. Should the name of the "man" who turned her away come to be made known, I think it's safe to say that less than favorable things are in his future.

Moore was on the scene when police confirmed her worst fears, Smith reported.

Sandy has been blamed for at least 37 deaths in New York City.

There is another story of a family of four where a tree crushed the front cab on their Silverado, two sons basically watch their parents die right in front of them, I beleive they were from Randolph.

I actually just passed a gas station that was in the process of getting a delivery. I swear that tanker truck had a police escort.

Which is a good thing, because they had enough of a police presence to keep the line orderly and traffic flowing.

I actually didn't even have to stop; I had 3/4 of a tank, and it didn't make sense to get it now when I really didn't need it. I think part of the problem is the hysteria that compounds the problem, people getting on line to get gas 'just in case' creating an even further shortage.

That's so horrible! I can't even imagine how that mother must feel, not getting help and then losing her boys. It breaks my heart.

I have no power, my brother has no power. My parents are up and running no problem, and didn't get a drop of water in their basement.

My boss wasn't so lucky. She lives in Massapequa. Her house got completely flooded.

Wow...I had no idea. My sister is in Islip, near souther state. They lost power for a day or so. Same with my mom in Brentwood.
