Why The Lines Are So Long In Florida And Ohio

There have been massive lines this weekend in the key swing states of Florida and Ohio, with some voters waiting six hours or more to cast their ballot.

This is not an accident. In Ohio, after attempting to cancel weekend early voting all together, Secretary of State Jon Husted (R) drastically back early voting hours.

In Florida, Gov. Rick Scott (R) reduced the number of early voting days from 14 to 8.

South Florida County Extends Early Voting — But Only In One GOP Stronghold

Last night, voters in Miami-Dade County were forced to wait in line up to six hours to vote. In some precincts voters who arrived at 7PM were not able to cast their ballots until 1AM.

In response, Republican-affiliated election officials in Miami-Dade have effectively extended early voting from 1PM to 5PM today by allowing “in-person” absentee voting. But this accommodation will only be available in a single location in the most Republican area of the county.

Nearly every city within 5 to 10 miles of this location — including Hialeah, Miami Springs, Sweetwater and Miami Lakes — has a substantial Republican voter registration advantage.

The most populous city among those is Hialeah where Republicans, powered by a large Cuban community, have an overwhelming registration advantage of nearly 20,000 voters. There will not be an opportunity for in-person absentee voting in downtown Miami or South Dade, where there are heavy concentrations of Democratic voters.

The decision to make the accommodation available was presumably made by Miami-Dade Election Supervisor Penelope Townsley. She is registered with no party affiliation but was appointed to her position by Republican Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

Mayor Gimenez did not request Gov. Rick Scott extend early voting throughout Miami-Dade county. Further, according to Jim DeFede, an investigative reporter for CBS News in Miami, the decision to have in-person absentee balloting was made last night but not announced publicly until 9:30AM this morning.

Requests for comment from the Miami-Dade Election Department were not immediately returned.

The Miami Herald reports that Miami-Dade abruptly closed the single voting location after less than 2 hours

New directive by Ohio secretary of state has some saying he is trying to suppress Tuesday's vote

Four days before Election Day, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted emphasized to boards of elections a step that voters who use provisional ballots on Tuesday will have to take.

Voters will be obligated to write on the provisional ballot form what type of ID they show at the polls and not rely on poll workers to do it for them, according to the directive issued late Friday afternoon.

Some voter advocates are crying foul. Attorney Subodh Chandra said he has asked a federal court to throw out the measure.

Matt McClellan, press secretary for Husted, said the secretary of state has not added a new regulation. He said the directive was needed because of recent court rulings, so that pollworkers know what is expected of them.

Chandra said Husted has ordered county boards of elections to reject provisional ballots when the form is not properly filled out.

Provisional ballots are cast for a variety of reasons on Election Day, often because a person reports to a polling place where he is not assigned to vote.

Critics of Husted's directive held a news conference Saturday outside the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

"SOS used to stand for secretary of state, but under the leadership of Jon Husted, SOS stands for secretary of suppression, and that is exactly what he is doing in his office," said State Sen. Nina Turner, a Cleveland Democrat.

Husted, a Republican, has been at the center of a number of election issues this year, including ones concerning hours and days for early voting. Previously, a court struck down a state law and permitted early balloting this weekend -- the last one before Election Day. Some 3,125 people voted Saturday at the Cuyahoga County board.

Early voting has been going on successfully all weekend long in a disaster area, here on the Jersey shore. And NJ is a Democratic lock.

No reason to suppress voting in a state you have zero chance to win. Ohio and Florida on the other hand. After all the controversy in 2004 in Ohio the newly elected Democratic Governor and SofS made it easier for folks to vote in 2008 by extendig early voting times. The 2008 election in Ohio went smoothly. In 2010 when Republicans took over they have done everything in their power to dismantle the progress made before 2008. Obama Campaign and others sued and a case went all the way to the Supreme Court.

Why shouldn't voting be convenient? Help me understand why people on your side are against making voting as easy and yes convenient as possible. Is it because the more people who vote the more likely your side loses?

Voters in Miami today and yesterday waited 6-8 hours to vote. Do you really think Americans should have to bring a lawn chair, food, a book to exercise their franchise? Miami-Dade Country had 1 election office open this weekend, for the entire county. That's outrageous.

I'll talk slowly.

This isn't about the ABILITY to vote, it's about whether or not an election can be "fixed" by not making the voting process "convenient" enough.

Every time I turn around you guys find one more thing to complain about. They still had early voting, just not enough to make you happy. They can still vote on ELECTION day, but that's not sufficient.

Of course it's OK to have armed Black Panthers outside a voting station -- I guess no one would find that the least bit inconvenient . . .
