Off To The DMV, *****es!!!!

My ride failed emissions since....oh, I don't know, September 2011.

$1500 in repairs and several traffic tickets later (failure to make repairs), I'm heading back this morning.

Wish me luck - if fixing this doesn't clear these error codes, I'm screwed.

Good luck.

Our beater car failed inspection three times. First two failures had estimates for $1500. $900. Third failure guy said $600 and he was the winner.

Did the beater drive itself to the shop, or was there a driver involved in the process this time?

Since Im out in the sticks, there is never much of a wait. I didn't even have time to read any of my emails before it was my turn.

To my shock and surprise, it actually passed. My 4Runner needed some sort of carbon canister/filter thing for the emissions, and of course the part alone was over 500. Installing the ****ing thing was another 500.

500 to install a cannister filter sure sounds like a ripoff.

"Dealer pressure tested the evap system
and told me it was my charcoal canister. 435.00 for canister and 150.00 labor."

Toyota couldn't figure out a way to make them accessible and replaceable like an oil filter??? Japs are smarter than that.

Yeah, they may be smarter now, but maybe not on 2001.
I looked up the part online to see if I was getting jobbed. Turns our the part itself is really over 400.0.

The problem is its location - it's located under my spare tire, which was completely rusted the **** on there. They had to drill the bolts out. At least I didn't find this out the hard way, with a flat tire on the side of the highway.

To top it off, NJ DMV makes it an extra hassle for you when you fail for emissions. Apparently you need to have your vehicle repaired at an 'emissions specialist' service station, and they need to to document what they fixed, and sign their name to the repairs.

Once you jump through that hoop, THEN you go back to the DMV to see if your car passes inspection. The other half of the reason I failed was because of my check engine lights. If you simply 'reset' the codes, they will also fail you for that as well, or so I'm told.

So I went to the DMV fully expecting to fail again, I figured I would just go and get my 30-day waiver for at least attempting to go for re-inspection.
I almost shat in my pants when a dull-eyed DMV employee busted out the ice scraper and scraped off my 3 'REJECTED' stickers.

It was like driving around with a sign that said 'pull me over and give me a ticket!'

I wish. If I did I'd have one less thing to complain about.

I dont miss that at all. I remmeber having to buy new tires back in VT due to lack or tread depth. In CO you just register your car and based on age of vehicle and type is what you pay. Downside is some scary looking cars on the road that you hope dont explode in your vicinity.

Too many people live in NJ...I guess they have to do something keep some of the riff-raff off the roads.

Up here you have to have at least enough tread on your tires to stick a penny in upside down and have enough tread to touch lincoln's head.

Went to DMV Garden City yesterday to turn in plates for my 2 cars. They had quite a pile of sand and seaweed laden plates.

Told the clerk: looks like Sandy has generated a lot of good business for you.

Humorless, lemon-sucking clerk: I wouldn't put it that way.

Nice talking to you, assclown.

^^^ DMV everywhere -- not known for their personalities.

Down here, DPS issues licenses and DMV issues registrations. We mistakenly used the term DMV to someone at the license office. Holy hell, you would have thought we just insulted her child.

"We are NOT the DMV. THAT is a different office. Do NOT confuse us."

Uh, okay there, shirley, calm down!
