I can judge this very easily. He is a gutless coward unless or until it is proven that the girlfriend posed an imminent and potentially lethal threat to his life.

If he simply commited suicide it would be a tragedy and immune from scrutiny. I am not judging that he was going through some type of personal crisis just his reaction in gunning down an innocent person (whether the victim lives or not is immaterial).

IMO shakin has nothing to justify or apologize for.

Gallows humor has been around since, well, forever. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it helps diffuse the tension and sadness.

Personally, the only people I'm thinking about are the dead girlfriend and that poor, now orphaned, baby.
