And with the 4 teams remaining, we're almost certainly going to move up.

means very little. this defense can beat up on lesser opponents all they want but they are not elite and nowhere near the defenses of SF, Houston, Pittsburgh, etc

Total yardage means crap.

Jets defense is ranked #22 in points allowed.

Hardly a top 10 NFL defense.

No question, you can call it what you want, rank it where you want...

but looking at the eye test of this defense, they're not very good.

The Jets D almost never gives up long drives!!

Because with Sanchez as the QB, the other team is typically starting on the Jets side of the field...

The defense has been a huge disappointment. I think someone posted that Aldon Smith has more sacks than our entire team? Yeah, some "top-10" defense we've got here.

I think Rex thinks if he has a top 5 defense it somehow validates him as a coach. He references HIS defenses ranking way more than any other head coach I can remember. The team is 5-7, THAT is the only statistic he should worry about.

Factor in how many of those points were allowed on a short field and recalibrate...

I don't think anybody cares about the defense any more. We all know it is a fraud.

There are about 5 good defenses in the league and then the next 15 you can lump together.

That includes special teams and points given up by the offense aswell. Not that don't agree with you, the key is to keep opponents out of the endzone.

+1

Mark has thrown and fumbled away a lot of TDs this year.

You can't take one statistic and point to it like it means we are the 10th best OVERALL defense. No way.

Do the eye test. They don't stack up that well.

Good/great defenses tighten up when the field is short.

Force a turnover, create a 3 and out, give up FG's instead of TD's.

You're implying the Pats have a great D then?

Not it all, but certainly improved from a year ago.

Pats defense is the 2nd youngest in the NFL and lead the league in forced turnovers.

I don't think this is the year to mock the Pats defense.... not only are they better than the Jets but they are leading the league in takeaways.

Agreed. The proper yardstick for measuring a D is scoring. I believe the NFL is the only sport where D is evaluated on something other than the amount of points the other team puts on the board. I'll take the #1 scoring D every day of the week. In fact, I think the best D should be ranked based on Points Allowed by the D Minus Points Scored by the D.

BTW, if the Jets #22 ranking includes special team and scores by the opposing D, it's an invalid ranking, IMO.
