This isn't my theory, it's been presented that these guys hit a soft target, and when opposition shows up, they make sure their plan comes to fruition and end it. I haven't heard if this guy had more ammo or not. If he did, you could infer that he wasn't done. I did hear that the cops showed up, they saw him run around the corner, and he killed himself. Armed guards are better at preventing robberies then motion lights.

NRA calls for armed police officer in every school
WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation's largest gun-rights lobby called Friday for armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings." The National Rifle Association broke its silence on last week's shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 children and staff dead. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the group's top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference. LaPierre said "the next Adam Lanza," the man responsible for last week's mayhem, is planning an attack on another school. "How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame from a national media machine that rewards them with wall-to-wall attention and a sense of identity that they crave, while provoking others to try to make their mark," LaPierre said. "A dozen more killers, a hundred more? How can we possibly even guess how many, given our nation's refusal to create an active national database of the mentally ill?" He blamed video games, movies and music videos for exposing children to a violent culture day in and day out. "In a race to the bottom, many conglomerates compete with one another to shock, violate, and offend every standard of civilized society, by bringing an even more toxic mix of reckless behavior and criminal cruelty right into our homes," LaPierre said. He refused to take any questions after speaking. Though security was tight, two protesters were able to interrupt LaPierre's speech, holding up signs that blamed the NRA for killing children. Both were escorted out, shouting that guns in schools are not the answer. LaPierre announced that former Rep. Asa Hutchison, R-Ark., will lead an NRA program that will develop a model security plan for schools that relies on armed volunteers. The 4.3 million-member NRA largely disappeared from public debate after the shootings in Newtown, Conn., choosing atypical silence as a strategy as the nation sought answers after the rampage. The NRA temporarily took down its Facebook page and kept quiet on Twitter. Since the slayings, President Barack Obama has demanded "real action, right now" against U.S. gun violence and called on the NRA to join the effort. Moving quickly after several congressional gun-rights supporters said they would consider new legislation to control firearms, the president said this week he wants proposals to reduce gun violence that he can take to Congress by January. Obama has already asked Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and pass legislation that would stop people from purchasing firearms from private sellers without a background check. Obama also has indicated he wants Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity magazines. http://news.yahoo.com/nra-calls-arme...162851713.html |

A conversation on this has already been started in the "shooting" thread, but I think this news does warrant it's own thread. For the sake of steering this conversation over here, here's my response:
That NRA press conference was hugely dissapointing. At a time when they could have led the conversation, they chose to dig their heels in their own alternate reality. With LaPierre citing video games and movies made twenty years ago, he sounded like a curmudgeonly grandfather, or the Drunk Uncle SNL character. He did nothing but enforce the opinion that his organization is painfully out of touch with society. And that's a shame, because I am a supporter of gun rights and the Second Amendment. The "policies" that LaPierre put forth are embarrassingly short-sighted, and probably not even possible -- practically or fiscally. It's amazing to think that this is the best they came up with after a week of media blackout. The NRA jumped the shark today. Edit - on second thought, I'm going to merge this with the gun laws thread. Last edited by Bonhomme Richard; 12-21-2012 at 12:29 PM. |

I love how LaPierre refused to answer questions because God forbid he was forced to add substance to his "plan".

The whole concept of banning certain types of weapons has no basis in preventing future tragedies. How do I know? Because the Brady Bill assault weapon ban is already in effect in CT. It didn't do anything to prevent the shooting at that school. An armed guard at the school may have actually helped. Gun safety training might have helped the mother not be such an irresponsible moron by keeping her guns accessable to a troubled youth. A working mental health system might have caught up to that kid before he snapped. Those people that think banning certain types of weapons or clips would help the situation are not serious about a solution. Seems to me they are taking advantage of a tragedy to push a political agenda. |
