An astounding poet/songwriter whose light I missed until the 90s. Often used, but the word genius is well appropriate.

My second favorite song writer. See... this is why I hate this game. I didn't think of Nick Drake! Here is my contribution:

One day, like a light switch suddenly illuminated in your mind, my greatness will stun you to your core.

Glad you like Nick Drake, too.

I'm such a fan of his darker stuff because when I found him close to 10+ years ago I could identify with it to my core. As time went on my favorite song he wrote is this Harvest Breed. It's not even 2 minutes long. But it's packed with something so brilliant it can't be described in words, only emotion.

Great tune. Many of Drake's songs are in eerie tunings which gives them, along with his unique vocals, a haunting quality.

saw him twice...both were tours with Lyle.

GREAT song writer. He talks too much during shows for my taste.

he played a tune in Charlotte ( cant remember which) and said he gave it to Bonnie Raitt. he's glad he did...it put 3 kids through college and then some.

Haha, yur right! I see him all the time. Not for awhile now (the tour doesn't stop in Shanghai .... The song is: "A Thing Called Love" & when I saw him, he said the royalties from Bonnie R, from this one song, paid for the nursery, for his baby" He has so many great albums; one of my favorites (which really "rocks out") is "Perfectly Good Guitar"

see post 4 ...... She is a legend.

I think of Joan Baez and her great performers. Story tellers as I like to think of them.

ok, great songwriters that are not really (or could be) great musicians. here it goes:

anything beatles
paul simon - one of the greatest hands down
david byrne - one of a kind...all original
colin hay - men at work, good simple solo acoustic tunes
mike scott - the waterboys. great songwriter with some of that irish twangy charm thrown in
frank black - the pixies. nuff said
steve harris - yes, steve harris
peter gabriel - ahhhh
Easy mutha fkin E - lol

thats all i can think of right now
