NY Jets owner Woody Johnson must do what he can to keep Rex Ryan happy

NY Jets owner Woody Johnson must do what he can to keep Rex Ryan happy, and GM Mike Tannenbaum, offensive coordinator Tony Sparano may need to go

The Jets’ infrastructure is on the brink of blowing up, and Woody Johnson should quickly make Rex Ryan happy or he could be starting over with his fifth coach since he bought the Jets in 2000.
Ryan has been miserable — morose might be a better description — ever since the embarrassment of the Butt Fumble game against the Patriots on Thanksgiving Night, when the Jets lost by 30 and left their fans with no hope.
As the Daily News is reporting, a team source said Ryan believes he’s better off getting fired if Johnson isn’t willing to invest money to get the anemic offense straightened out, and that likely starts with Ryan wanting Johnson to swallow what remains of offensive coordinator Tony Sparano’s contract and to spend to bring in quality offensive players.
If Johnson doesn’t give in to Ryan, it could lead to a showdown and prompt a mutual parting, with Johnson buying out the two years and more than $6 million left on Ryan’s deal at a reduced cost.

It would be a pathetic ending to Ryan’s four years with the Jets after he came in promising a trip to the White House. I don’t think Johnson wants to fire Ryan, and you can be sure he doesn’t want to pay off his entire contract.

What should Woody do?

The successful teams have continuity and stability. They don’t start over every four years.

It’s in Johnson’s best interests to buy Ryan’s happiness. He’s a good coach and is not the problem. He is passionate about winning and he knows how to win. This is a personnel issue that can be partially addressed in free agency. Not even Bill Belichick could win with this Jets roster, especially on offense where GM Mike Tannenbaum has put together the worst collection of skill-position players in the NFL and that was true even before Santonio Holmes, the only legitimate threat, was lost for the season with a foot injury in the fourth game.

Tannenbaum is hanging by a thread. The best-case scenario for him is nothing changes. But another possibility is he keeps his job but loses his personnel power and final say. The worst-case scenario is Johnson fires him, but with two years remaining on his contract, Tannenbaum would at least collect his money.

Ryan and Tannenbaum made two huge mistakes in the offseason. The first was hiring Sparano, an old school coach with old school ideas. Ryan controls his staff, so this one is on him. Give an assist to Tannenbaum, who consulted with his mentor Bill Parcells, who once hired Sparano as the Dolphins head coach. Surely, Parcells gave Sparano good grades. Ryan really whiffed here.

Of course, Tim Tebow was the other big mistake. Sources insisted Thursday night that Tebow was Tannenbaum’s idea and not some PSL plot by Johnson. Tannenbaum knows Tebow was a mistake. But Tebow would not be a Jet unless Ryan had signed off on it. Once the Jets saw Tebow practice, they knew they didn’t even want him running the Wildcat more than a couple plays a game. They were stuck.

Ryan, who has two years left on his deal, will be coaching for his job in 2013, which will make it hard for him to recruit a quality offensive coordinator such as Norv Turner, who is about to get fired as Chargers head coach. Turner said last week that he’s willing to become a coordinator again and he’s one of the few coaches in the NFL who could possibly fix Mark Sanchez.

If Ryan is gone, it will happen next week. Then Johnson can try to entice Sean Payton, Jon Gruden, Mike Holmgren or Bill Cowher to the Jets circus.

Good luck. He should just try to make Ryan happy.

Rex Ryan needs to wake up to reality that the team as a whole is under performing and he is the coach.
They are now one of the most lacking teams physical in the league and it takes more than a year to turn that around. The only argument Rex has if the GM has been calling the shots.

LOL, do what is necessary to make Rex happy? The fing jets and Tanny have done that all along. Rex was happy with sparano, rex ran rough shod over Tanny. They should do what they can to make him UNHAPPY, as in hire a vet hard ass GM that will tell him to stfu and get out of player chosing.

What a joke, Rex has had his way with the team far more than he should have and he should be very happy to keep his present job and coach football. Her can go back to being a DC with another team tommorrow because teams are not going to be lining up tohire him as a HC until a few years of cool down.

Under performing? They have less talent on offense than any other team in the league. Our line is the worst in the league with the exception of Mangold.

I agree with this article. Rex Ryan is still a very good HC even after understanding all of his shortcomings. Loyal to a fault, not an offensive guy, doesn't coach the fundamentals enough, etc. All of that are things he needs to work on, but at the end of the day, he's still the choice for HC of the NYJ. And if by some chance we do get this player talent thing straightened out? You can be guaranteed Rex Ryan will get every bit of effort and achievement out of that talent. He wasn't given the horses the last couple of seasons.

I hope this all happens. I hope Woody makes Rex happy by going out and hiring some great offensive minds and getting some great offensive talent through free agency.

They were one of the better ol a few years ago and some coaches get the best out of average players . Rex has not come close to that.

These guys are below average. Especially at Tackle. They were good before Woody Retired. Look at the 2009/2010 Roster and compare it to now, we have far less talent.

As predicted back when the Jets acquired that clown, Teblow -- it will cost Tanny or Rex, maybe both, their job. Now it is leaking out tat Tanny wanted that Teblow. On that count alone he should be fired immediately, not to mention his other poor player evaluations. Not sure what he was thinking but every football fan knows Teblow cannot throw the ball -- a required skill of any QB.

As for Sparano, I hate to say I told you so, but......! I never understood this dumb azz move? This is not brain surgery; go get an assistant from NO or GB to run over phucking offense!

Finally, for those clamoring for Parcells, I hope you read this article and change your mind quickly. He recommended FG Sparano to Tanny, LMAO. No more retreads for coaches who cut their teeth in the NFL 30 years ago. I want young open-minded coaches who offense strategy is more aligned with today's NFL rules -- throwing the football downfield.

+100000

This is Rex distancing himself from Tanny even though he is as much to blame. Is Rex no saying the he had Sporano forced on him? I get it that Rex wants out of the circus. It's just funny because he created this circus.

He was the one that wanted Sanchez. He was the one that predicted SBs. He was the one on Hard Knocks in front of the cameras.

Rex may be good with the Xs and Os but he is not a great coach. This team is no where near as good as the team he inherited.

What is that supposed to mean? Is Mangold part of the line or not? Our line has held together pretty well this season, all told. NYJ 12th in NFL rushing yards this season.

The talent level on this team is just sub standard.. I believe it starts with a GM. You bring in the guy you want to go with, Tanny is a goner at the end of the season, and let him decide on the coach. I'm ok with Rex but I certainly don't think he is irreplaceable. In fact, he is probably better off as a Defensive Coordinator.

We're 24th in yards per carry. We're 12th in rushing yards because we have the 6th most attempts in the league. And a good number of those attempts have come while we were losing. Runs while losing usually produce more yards, not less.

This article really makes no sense. Rex is going to have this huge showdown with Woody over firing Sparano but Sparano is on Rex because he hired him? Does Rex really need to have that showdown because Woody is too cheap to fire him? If so this franchise is even more pathetic then I thought.

First of all, Rex Ryan doesn't need to be made 'happy'. He has no leverage and has been a case study in what not to do as a head coach the past 2 seasons.

But this repeated fallacy that you need stability to be successful is mindless. Stability comes from ACTUALLY BEING SUCCESSFUL. You earn longevity. Sticking with the wrong guy for longer than you should is absurd.

This is a classic example of correlation being mistaken for cause.

the article doesn't make much sense. why would rex want woody to eat sparano's contract for someone new if sparano was rex's choice? tannenbaum needs to go or be reassigned at this point because he has not done a good job of restocking the jets or even personnel decisions. in truth this offense has been bad for a very long time going back to mangini and before. they need a qb who can take charge. they had one in favre and good things happened even with schitty as oc. so it seems pretty silly to explode the whole offense when maybe they need some talent infusion at a few positions and stability at others.

Couple of things:

1. Shouldn't it be Rex Ryan responsible for making his boss happy, and not the other way around?

2. Does anyone else get the impression that the reason these beat writers seem to like Rex Ryan is that .. he makes it easier for them to write stories (and thus sell newspapers, and thus enhance their careers)?

I honestly think these beat writers are suddenly realizing the cash cow is suddenly at risk and doing what they can to convince Woody to keep it around. With a new GM and coach around they might actually have to do some real reporting again instead of relying on Rex's guarantees of ridiculousness to pretty much write their papers by himself.
