Rex Ryan is a great postseason head coach with non-Ryan draft picks; problem is, he's a terrible regular season coach with his own draft picks, so his early postseason success means very little. SAR I |

That is a tree upon which no one should bark. SAR has already explicitly stated that Sanchez gets a complete pass for the year due to the surrounding talent. He could butt-fumble every single play and SAR wouldn't blink an eye. He would still think this team could potentially win a super bowl with him in the right situation. 30% chance.

SONNY WERBLIN Sar, I agree with you on the relevance of the foot video in regards to Rex's "judgment" and ability to make sound, rational decisions. That said, there is plenty of evidence indicating that Rex is a "good" HC. The most basic of which is the fact that his team is 38 and 33 over the past 4 seasons, with 2 trips to the AFCCG. To do that, you have to at least be "good". I would also note that this year was far worse than last, but this year he did not lose the locker room.
Truth is, the '09 team was headed for 7-9 before the Colts and Bengals laid down. Similarly, the '10 team would have gone 7-9 if not for Mark Sanchez miracle 4th quarter comebacks. While our postseason success is unquestioned, the regular seasons are awful and postseason's don't happen without consistent regular seasons as you know. I'm most concerned by the question of whether Rex can adapt and improve as a HC. That walking hemorrhoid to the north has had plenty of time to "become" a great HC. He was nothing more that a "good" HC and an excellent DC until Brady came along to provide him the cover he needed so he had enough time to develop as a HC. Rex Ryan cannot improve. The average NFL coach lasts 4 seasons and they grow during that span, usually after Year 1 or Year 2. What we have in Rex is what we have. He's a good DC and a bad HC. Bill Belichick does a lot more than be a DC and babysit Tom Brady. The best thing BB does is he gets his team ready for EVERY game. That's why they average 12 wins per season. People slam him for running up the score. What he's doing is keeping his team sharp. Rex Ryan's teams are up and down, never on an even keel, never consistent. Rex has no cover. What he has is a team that has become less talented since he became coach. Is he at fault? Hell yes. He wanted a lot of these guys. But, Rex is not a scout and the Jets should not have let him do a scout's job. That's one way to look at it. Another way to look at it is that Terry Bradway, Joey Clinkscales, and Mike Tannenbaum make one hell of an advisory committee and any HC in the NFL would kill to be able to have final say in drafting to get "their guys". I don't see how any HC could be set up to succeed and feel comfortable more than Rex Ryan under this approach. Rex deserves one year to put the ship back on course. The new GM has to tell him that he needs to coach the whole team, not just the D; accept the reality that today's NFL is a passing league; and become a better game manager. If he doesn't improve as a HC in 2014, show him the door. No. Rex Ryan doesn't deserve anything. 4th year head coaches don't suddenly change their stripes in Year 5. Rex Ryan is still making rookie mistakes. How many dumb timeouts do we witness each week? How many times does it take 41 seconds to get a play in? How many sloppy OL and DL penalties do we suffer? Why does the team play at 110% effort one week and 50% effort the next? How could we enter the 2012 season with an offense that bad? How can we be the only team in the NFL without a pass-catching RB for emergency dump-offs? How can we have a 4 year commitment to defense and be among the worst teams in the NFL in QB pressures and sacks and interceptions? We've seen what we're going to see in Rex Ryan. He is awful nurturing young talent, awful in disciplining a locker room. He is the antithesis of what a rebuilding team needs. SAR I |

Edwards, Holmes, Cotchery, Burress, Keller, Tomlinson, Richardson, Jones, Greene (young), Washington. Replacement players this/last year: Schillens, Hill, Kerley, McKnight, Connor, Gates, Hilliard, Reuland, Gilyard, Greene (old). Find me 1 player that's a better one-for-one swap of the guy he replaced. You can't. We have the worst set of receiving targets in the NFL. It's hard to be a good QB when you have nothing to throw to. Note that I did not list the OL fails. Note that I did not list the Coordinator fail. Note that I did not list the Tebow distraction. Are you being paid for your ignorance? SAR I |

Mark Sanchez is 4-2 in the postseason and was the best Jet on the field in both Championship Games. I'm quite convinced that he can be a great playoff performer because he already has more games under his belt than 28 other NFL starting quarterbacks, and his QBR is over 94 in those contests. We knew what the offense looked like in Cortland in July. And that was when it was 100% healthy. Take away Keller, Holmes, and Hill and combine it with an awful OL and a running game that stinks and you're looking at a situation in which no QB could succeed. The 23 year old kid got past his first 10 game jitters and won 16 of his next 20 games including 4 memorable 4th quarter comebacks that turned a disappointing 7-9 season into a special 11-5 season. On opening day 2011, no one was worried about Mark Sanchez because of how well he had played from late 2009 through 2010. Ryan traded or cut every good playmaker he had to puff up the defense. That ruined our QB. Add to that the OL, the OC, and the Tebow shuffle and of course by November he was a wreck and by December he was a joke. This isn't a surprise. SAR I |

Pennington was bad because he had a weak arm and a frail body. Sanchez is bad because either a) he just sucks or b) he had the worst offense in the NFL to lead. I think there's a 30% chance he's a very good quarterback that's been undermined by a terrible HC who doesn't give a damn about offense. Let's find out. SAR I |

Not at all.
Could the Jets have had a better "tryout" for a QB than they did with Mark Sanchez? Rookie given no time to carry the clipboard still manages to go 4-6 in his first 10 shaky newb games. Then goes on an epic 16-4 run. Then wins 4 of 6 playoff games and is the best Jet on the field in two AFC Championship Games. Coming out of 2010, boy, you'd say the Jets found a very good kid who is 25 and ready to really learn and grow on the job. Right? You bet. That summer of 2011 no one was talking about Mark Sanchez as a 'problem'. We were flirting with Aso and adding missing pieces like Plaxico, remember? I do. Well what the hell happened? Did Mark just take stupid pills? Or did the Jets take away every offensive weapon they'd given him and replace them with sh-t? Or did the Jets let the OL fall to pieces and let him get slammed around? Or did the Jets keep an OC who has his head in the sand? Or did the Jets bring in a new OC that had never done that job before? Or did the Jets bring in Tim Tebow to mess with his head? Or did the Jets leave Cortland with the worst offense in the NFL? I don't have an infatuation with Mark Sanchez. I just know that we had a 23 year old kid that accomplished a hell of a lot by the time he turned 25, still a baby, and was mishandled by a lousy head coach that doesn't give a damn about offense. Let's find out. Let's see if he sucks outright or just needs a set of offensive playmakers like the other successful NFL quarterbacks have. SAR I |

I don't know if Sanchez was responsible for all the success the Jets had early on but this season he's been very inconsistant. I watch Tom Brady and other QBs and the the receiver so he doesn't miss a step and gets extra YAR. When he throws a screen it is jerky and off target even when completed. When he is not rushed, he rushes. When his receivers aren't open he holds onto the ball. When we are in a tight game he panics and forces throws. When he hands off he doesn't have the right handoff or timing.
I've looked at his mechanics and his foot work is off 50% of the time ie., throwing off his back foot etc. Yes you can fix these things but everything is broke and he's got his head up his a$$. He's in magazines with various celebrities and wears $2000 suits. Give me a break. His mind is on his 40 mill or whatever it is. |

I'm glad Rex is taking a vaca, he deserves it after such a long season. Whatever the guy needs to do to unwind and get focused on next season.
