The whole problem in this country is there are way to many people who pay no tax. They could careless how high the taxes so long as they get the freebies but guess who is paying for the freebies. This will only going to end when everyone has a stake in the game. You get nothing if you don't have some flesh in the game. It is time for the taxpayers that enough is enough. Oh BTY the Obamacare taxes haven't kicked in yet and who pays for them?

No that's not the whole problem. The structurail problem with our debt is that health care costs in this country have been going up for decades as a percentage of GDP and will soon be over 20% of GDP. This is a structurial issue that is impacting the debt of the USA, States, local governments, businesses and individuals.

This rising cost of a critical piece of everyones everyday expenses coupled with the demographic changes is the reason debt will continue to explode regardless of who the President is. If we shift more of this cost back to consumers from taxpayers the economy will simply shrink in other areas as health care costs take up a greater percentage of economic life.

I can honestly say during a huge economic contraction my health care costs of insurance went up an absurd amount while tax revenue was decreasing by huge amounts.

Perhaps...but we spen WAY TOO MUCH. the equivalent of a family earning 100K, spending 170K annually and having credit card increase every year by 70 K.

No corporation can exist with similar policies. in fact fortune 500 companies are going out of business at record rates. Current corporations do not have pension plans.

A family that earns $28,000, spends $38,000 and has $170,000+ on a credit card...

The tax increase on the millionaires amounts to roughly a $400 a month payment towards that debt.

Not as a generality, but in this particular case, yes. Given the fiscal standing of the programs being funded by payroll taxes, a tax cut cannot be reasonably viewed as anything but temporary.

There are many proponents for a consumption tax, but do we really want to discourage consumer spending in an economy fundamentally built and reliant on consumer spending?

If it replaces Income and other Federal taxes, I'd support it.

If (as is likely to come to pass) it's simply an additional tax form in addition to all the others, then no. Hell no.

Sadly, most likely tax changes is the imposition of a VAT Tax in the U.S., in addition to the existign tax forms already in place.

It will never happen that corporate, income and wealth taxes will be replaced by a consumption tax. It may be an additional tax but you simply can't expect the power base in this country that was built on the tax code to give it up. It's like getting rid of deductions nice idea but nobody has the balls to mention an actual deduction to get rid of.

This administration AND Democrats in both houses of Congress have stated within the past week that the recently enacted taxes on the rich are not enough to cover their spending plans.
More taxes will be necessary including those on the rich, the middle class and business. There will be no negotiation on reductions.
The programs needed are those to enrich the needy in our society. That would include the usual leeches and illegals. Just lovely.

This kind of bashing of the underclass is exactly why Republicans will continue to get their clocks cleaned in elections. Until Republicans can explain how their economic positions are going to help the middle class and create more jobs and opportunity they have nothing.

As long as Republicans are viewed as the protectors of corporate interests and not the creators of real pro-growth policy that lifts all Americans they are dead meat.
