It just takes a couple of bad draft picks and FA signings to do that to a team. We doubled down with Sanchez and could get burnt both ways. Someone mentioned Cincinnati's situation....Andy Dalton in year 2 of a rookie contract is a solid starter. Mark Sanchez gets a big $$$ extension and may not be on the team next year. Combine that with the big elephant in the room....or rather the big elephant on the IR (Revis) and you can see how a handful of contract situations are hampering us.

The way to win in the NFL is by drafting well and getting guys to REALLY contribute in their first 4 or 5 years while they are on cheap rookie contracts.

BINGO Draft well and get guys to REALLY contribute in their first 4 or 5 years while they are on cheap rookie contracts! That is the key. The Jets went for broke with free agents and overpaying to resign some of their best players. It got them to 2 championship games. They really needed one more win to validate their plan but they didnt get it. Jets should of went far in playoffs the year they had Brett Farve - they were 8-3 but things went badly wrong.

With Rex still head coach I think the Jets might still be looking for that magical GM that can get them back in the playoffs quickly without rebuilding especially with a superbowl being played at their stadium. Its the wrong approach but I see the Jets trying to make another go at it than properly rebuilding.

Oh we remember... Except that team had a quality defense to support Cassell. If Cassell had played with the Cheaters' current defense, the record would have been 5-11.

oooh cheaters. And this years offense is much better.
They gave up 19.7 points per game in 2008 vs 20.7 this year. How do
you equate 1 point per game to be a delta of 6 games.

And when do you think he would have went to mallet?

I just looked at the cap page and was surprised at Harris' cap hit since people are calling for him to be cut.

If Harris is cut, the cap hit is 13 million..... (WOW)

People who can't get cut by cap numbers (without huge hits)

Sanchez
Harris
DBrick
Mangold
Revis
Cromartie
Holmes
Coples

People who probably should be cut or reworked (or considered because of cap numbers )
Pace
Scott

i dont think people understand that by trading Revis we take a cap hit and by trading Cro we see cap savings. It's really simple to me. Cro is at his highest value he ever will be and will provide some cap relief. While Revis's value isn't at its highest and will provide a cap hit.

Trade Cro.

Out of that list, Sanchez is the biggest underperformer, probably followed by Harris although David Harris is clearly starting caliber (just overpaid). Guys like Revis and Holmes are injury problems now (damaged goods) but still valuable, as is everyone else on that list.

On paper that's great. Let's move to reality. If we trade Cromartie the Jets could....could....have zero starting CBs. Revis is expected to be back healthy but who knows, and what kind of player will he be post-injury? Kyle Wilson is a borderline #2 CB.

Let's not blowup the best unit on the entire team, especially when Landry (who was largely responsible for the success of the secondary) may not be back.

I think the Jets will get a pretty good idea of how well Revis is recovering by the time they think about trading Cro. All the reports you hear are very positive so far. Wilson is an ok starter and we still got Aaron Berry. He never got healthy last year but the fact that the Jets still kept him around tells me that they see something in him. For Detroit he was a good starter, just a headcase. Trufant is a decent nickel corner for certain matchups.

I dont think CB is a position where we do not have much depth, especially considering our top three right now are better than the top three of any other team. Now the question is how much value Rex puts on Cro...

Thank you. It's one thing to recognize the Jets mistakes, but let's not continue the BB worship. The Pats are good because of Brady, end if discussion.

They make no particularly good personell decisions and are mostly poor drafters.

It's not as bad but we have no money to sign any high price FA's because we have to spread this out. We have 12 positions to fill this offseason.

David Harris MUST take a pay cut and say goodbye to Sione Pouha. Time for Kenrick Ellis to step up.

Yes, but all of those people you just cut have to have others to fill their position. Sure we can get under the cap but still have a LOT of roster spots to fill with very little money.

And that equates to 106mill of money already accounted for after those players are cut. You then need to add 6mill to sign to rookies. that leaves 9 mill for 11 spots, how is that not as bad as you think?
