Jets GM search becoming battle of attrition
By Bill Lankhof, Toronto Sun

Wanted: General manager.

Location: New York City. Poor side of tracks.

Job Description: Must have confidence in high-visibility atmosphere. Must convince New York media there is an NFL team in town not named the Giants. Comfortable inheriting loud-mouth head coach, one quarterback who doesn’t have a prayer and backup who has nothing but a prayer. Sanity optional.

Compensation: Position includes $1 million towards apartment. (Of course, in downtown New York, that should just about get a parking space with a big cardboard box.)

There are only 32 general managers in the NFL and so far the New York Jets can’t give their GM position away.

OK, the Alouettes’ Jim Popp would take the job.

But the Jets haven’t offered it to the Montreal Alouettes’ NFL wannabe. Contrary to some reports, sources say the team hasn’t even officially interviewed him — although they have spoken to Popp, who told RDS at the weekend: “I would like the challenge of turning the New York Jets around and bring them to the playoffs. It’s New York.”

At this rate he could become the last candidate standing. After three weeks of head-hunting the team is getting shut out — just like their 30th-ranked offence this season.

They have interviewed 10 candidates but No. 1 option, Dave Caldwell, stood them up for Jacksonville. Which is kind of like getting dumped in favour of one of Cinderella’s least-attractive sisters. They had interest in Tom Telesco and John Dorsey. Both considered listening to Rex Ryan and watching Mark Sanchez for the next 12 months, then decided that this had about as much chance of being bloodless as a Chainsaw Massacre flick. They picked San Diego and the Chiefs instead.

The Jets are football’s version of purgatory. Normally a job in New York would be sweet. But signing on as the Jets’ GM is tantamount to being set up to fail. Think Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment — but without the good P.R. They even have a team president, Neil Glat, auditioning to be the closest thing to Jerry Jones east of the Mississippi. The New York Post recently speculated over Glat’s involvement in football matters and how Jerry Angelo — fresh off a stint as Bears’ general manager of mayhem — has hobbled into the lead for the job.

Listening to this, you’d swear Richard Peddie was in charge, living in New York and about to hire Brian Burke to fix things up. And, we all know how well that turned out.

Reporting on what another paper speculated on. Journalism at its finest.
