That's a possibility BUT according to Deadspin's updated article, the Lennay hoax pre-dates Te'o's involvement so playing the hoax victim card might work.

He was originally fooled, found out about it, but then was too embarrassed to reveal it.

Tha really is his best course of action.

Being known as a very religious guy would really help in that scenario. He can say that he is gay, enter one of those religious homosexual reform programs. Then he can emerge a few months later, claim that he prayed the gay away, and resume banging chicks as if nothing had ever happened. And he would be lauded as a hero by certain religious groups.
