As your post correctly infers the situation is fluid. For once IMO the Jets are doing something right. They are not telling us or the media what they are going to do before they do it.

One of the benefits of guys like Gamble and Idzik is that they are football lifers. Their dads worked in the NFL, they grew up in the NFL, and they pursued careers in the NFL. They're 100% about football.

That's no guarantee for success, but that is an asset to have.

Nutshell version: Todd was the #6 pick. He was replacing the legend Namath. He sucked in 1977. Team went 3-11. Fans wanted 9th round pick Matt Robinson who looked great in the pre-season. Todd started off 1978 with 2 wins but then they lose 3 in a row. In comes Robinson. The team finishes 8-8. But Todd was the #6 pick. So they go back to him in 1979. Meanwhile Todd stuffs Steve Serby into a locker because he publicly supported Robinson in the paper.

They both sucked. Robinson was more fun to watch because he was more mobile and was willing to scramble while Todd stood in the pocket and was willing to be sacked.

Don't forget to add Jets were able to trade Robinson to Denver at end of 1979 for 2nd overall pick in 1980. Jets took Lam Jones, and passed on Anthony Munez.
