Those are the facts. He might be a great player-picker. Who knows. But in reading his bio, he is a "C" level candidate, another one of those "I can fix him" types that his new boss, Rex Ryan, loves so much.

How would you know he's a C level candidate... were you involved in the interview process?

EDIT: I understand your beef regarding Rex Ryan. But you complain about everything....I'm starting to believe you eat rocks for breakfast.

For the lazy people

@MMehtaNYDN: John Idzik played college football & coached for two years (as a grad assistant & college WRs coach) many years ago. #nyj

I really wanted Gamble, but guess it didn't work out. Very optimistic with Idzik, like his resume and helped turned around 3 franchises. To me a good leader doesn't work alone and hopefully brings some good people with him here.
That's just awesome to read!!! Congrats!

Of the JETS roster?

If so, I'm sure he thought what we all thought :

SANCHEZ HAS GOT TO GO.

Oh and I'm sure he was thinking "Hmm....Braylon has something left after all. Let me re-sign him"

Nah. That was kinda dumb. Especially since he took the time to actually write the message on a napkin.

It's might be time to collect rent from the tenant.

Jets expected to make offer to Seahawks executive John Idzik to become new G.M.

Jets expected to make offer to Seahawks executive John Idzik to become new G.M.

BY Manish Mehta

The Jets’ thorough search for a new general manager is nearly over.

Woody Johnson appears to have zeroed in on Seahawks vice president of football administration John Idzik, who reportedly will be offered the job to replace the recently fired Mike Tannenbaum. The Jets, who interviewed at least nine candidates in the past three weeks, were poised to offer the position to Idzik as early as Thursday night, according to ESPN.

Idzik had a second interview Wednesday before flying back to Seattle.

He was part of the second wave of candidates to interview with Johnson, team president Neil Glat and executive search firm head Jed Hughes last week. Johnson & Co. expanded the candidate pool after top choice David Caldwell chose the Jaguars G.M. job.

Johnson narrowed the list down to Idzik and Steelers’ executive Omar Khan, both of whom have specialized in contract negotiations and salary cap navigation. Former G.M.s Jerry Angelo, Ted Sundquist and in-house candidate Scott Cohen were also in consideration after the first round of interviews.

The prevailing belief entering the search process was that the Jets, whose roster is in desperate need of a makeover, would choose a G.M. with a personnel/scouting background like Caldwell.
However, Johnson looks like he’ll go with Idzik, whose business and operations acumen is the strongest part of his resume. Idzik and Glat previously had dealings with each other when Glat worked for the league office.

The next significant step will be what Idzik decides to do to revamp the Jets’ personnel department. Johnson said last week that the new general manager, not Rex Ryan, will have final say on personnel matters. Ryan wasn’t involved for much of the search process in the past few weeks.

Idzik, who has a math degree from Dartmouth, isn’t a clone of Tannenbaum, who was largely viewed as a cap specialist despite spending six years in the pro personnel department. Idzik played college football before coaching two seasons (as a grad assistant at Duke and wide receivers coach at SUNY Buffalo).

Idzik was a player personnel assistant for the Buccaneers before rising up the ranks to assistant general manager during his 11 seasons with Tampa Bay. He spent three years as the senior director of operations with the Cardinals before joining the Seahawks in 2007.

Idzik has ties to the Jets. His father, John, was an assistant for Walt Michaels in the late 70s.

The Jets have been here before. The ideal candidate has presented himself and a vision of the future at least started to come into place.

The last time it was current Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell, who had a pair of interviews with the Jets before accepting the job with Jacksonville.

A package was reportedly prepared and included a $1 million housing allowance.

After another series of interviews, the focus has shifted to Seahawks VP of football administration John Idzik. An ESPN report says the Jets are prepared to offer him a deal and that Idzik, who is back in Seattle, will mull the offer. The contract could have been offered as soon as tonight, the report said, though a person with knowledge of the situation said nothing would be made official Thursday.

So it goes for the Jets, who are just one of many teams still wading the waters after a Black Monday that claimed a dozen jobs not including coordinators and position coaches – seven head coaches and five general managers. There were the quick starters like the Chiefs, who immediately pounced on their coach, Andy Reid and followed with GM John Dorsey shortly after. The Chargers, with GM Tom Telesco and head coach Mike McCoy followed a few days after that.

Instead of casting a small net, though, Woody Johnson and search firm Korn/Ferry have thrown a catch-all tarp into the pool of possible candidates. They have done more than a dozen interviews taking into consideration current executives, former GMs and, apparently, a highly successful executive from the Canadian Football League.

They have entertained pure football men engrained in personnel and salary cap experts whose advantage lies more in balancing the Jets bloated budget than it does stockpiling an aging roster with young talent from the draft.

Idzik appears to be a mixture of both. As an assistant general manager with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers he helped construct a Super Bowl winning team (2003).

As a senior director of football operations for the Cardinals, he oversaw a franchise that would make it to the Super Bowl a season after his departure.

In Seattle, where the team has made the playoffs twice since his arrival, Idzik “oversees player negotiations, the team’s compliance with the NFL salary cap, player personnel transactions, all football operations budgets, staff and team contracts, team travel and most aspects of the day-to-day football operations,” according to the team’s website. He also maintains an active role in player evaluation.

Idzik was in place three years before Seahawks GM John Schneider was hired with assistance from the same search firm the Jets are currently using.

If Idzik turns out to be the candidate, the Jets will not be accused of jumping to conclusions. They will not be accused of not maximizing the cost of the search firm and they will not be accused of getting caught up in the teams who landed their candidates much earlier.

“As they say, ‘when the process is over, it’s over,’” Johnson said during his season-ending press conference. “We’ll keep looking until we find somebody that we’re comfortable with that fits our vision of where we want to take this team.”

Though there are some names off the board, the Jets are hardly the only team still searching.
