We are assuming Revis will make unreasonable contract demands...
Maybe he will be willing to negotiate more fairly since he is coming off a serious injury...

It's not farfetched to say that the Jets could legitimately fill 4 starting spots with good players by trading Revis.
No one is giving up 2 #1 s for Revis and still paying him.

The owner is cheap, it's true. Their windows of opportunity open and close much quicker than most teams. Marvin Lewis hasn't had much support there from the ownership in terms of spending $.

Let's make one thing perfectly clear:

You don't win Super Bowls by trading away HOF players.

You win Super Bowls by drafting HOF players.

It's as simple as that.

Yeah let's trade the best player in franchise history at a time when he's coming off a season ending ACL surgery.

Yes, lowest trade value possible for the best CB in the game!

Look at Seattle's contracts. Do they have a mega contract? No, it's modeled like NE's team is.

We have some huge contracts on the Jets. Unfriendly towards signing others.

I see Idzik keeping the core of the team young, as long as he gets control.

If we land a single first round pick, chances that pick turns into a player as good as Revis. I'd say 1 in 100. Don't like the odds. And they may be longer than that

Jets owner Woody Johnson to explore trading Darrelle Revis
By Jason La Canfora | CBS Sports NFL Insider
January 23, 2013 7:28 pm ET

The New York Jets, fresh off an exhaustive hunt for new general manager John Idzik, will explore options to deal star corner Darrelle Revis this offseason, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Revis, whose contract voids after the 2014 season, is set to earn $6 million in 2013 (between salary and bonuses), and owner Woody Johnson has strong reservations about the ability to extend Revis's deal, the sources said. Johnson has expressed his desire to attempt to land value for Revis now, rather than risk losing him as an unrestricted free agent a year from now, most likely seeking as much draft-pick compensation for him as possible.

Dealing Revis would incur a $9 million cap hit due to some option-bonus prorations involved in the contract -- thus Revis would count an additional $3 million against the cap than he is currently scheduled to -- but the Jets could navigate that relatively easily according to sources familiar with their cap situation, via a restructuring or by releasing a veteran. The team is using 2013 as a year for cap and budgetary housecleaning, to get situated for the future. It stands to reason that come 2014, both Revis and head coach Rex Ryan, are gone.

For more on Revis' situation, tune into Inside the NFL on Showtime Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET.
As so it begins. Where does one start?

How are the Jets willing to incur a $9 million dollar cap hit if they trade Revis? Thereby making Revis count against the cap for 3 million more than he already does in 2013 even if he is off the team. The Jets would be willing to "incur" a 9 million dollar cap hit on Revis but not on Sanchez.

A piece of this is underlined. Trading Revis and using 2013 as a year for cap and budgetary housecleaning to get situated for the future suggests a "rebuild" not a retool season where you expect to contend.

I would be shocked if Rex Ryan would be happy with this. I understand that Dennis Thurman earned his weight in gold in 2012 by losing Revis and still ranking 2nd in the league against the pass. Maybe Rex and Dennis think they can repeat the same and live without Revis. I doubt it. The Jets trade Revis. Rex has to know he is done and the fan base has to realize that we are not a contender in 2013.

The Jets might get decent value in return but you'd be hard pressed to get anything remotely close to Revis as a player who is headed on a hall of fame journey and still is in his prime.

If Jason LaCanfora's report is true and many us suspected and thought about the possibility. Then, I have mixed emotions about dealing Revis. If he's leaving us anyway after 2013 and we can't keep him. Then it may make sense to get the best value now. It goes to show you how much Mike Tannenbaum botched things in his dealings with Revis and put the Jets in a bad spot these last few years.

Pay Revis, and let the other contracts fall out and we will be fine. You just can't get rid of your star player because you have other bad contracts. Tanny made the bed, now Idzick has to sleep in it for a year.
You're absolutely correct. And of all the bad contracts, only Ferguson and Mangold are going to be here opening day 2014. Harris and Cromartie's 2014 numbers are insane and 100% will be re-done or cut. Holmes and Sanchez, if they survive the 2013 cuts, will surely be elsewhere soon after.

Revis wants to get paid, and he may not be patient to sit through a 2-3 year rebuild.

I would say call Detroit, who is desperate for a leader on defense, then call Pitt and make them bid against each other.

We've showed that we don't need him to be strong on defense.

If he played the entire season, how many games do the Jets win?

The question is simple...... is it a good idea to give Darrelle Revis probably 6/90 with probably 50 mil guaranteed to buy him out of his guaranteed Free Agency after 2013 otherwise? Because does anybody really think he's going to look to sign a team friendly deal now? C'mon.

I think the answer is no, too much money to invest in one player, especially a player who is probably something of a luxury piece considering how well Cro and Wilson played last year, we had the #8 ranked defense in the league with Revis missing 14 games. That's not to say Revis isn't great, but one of the benefits of stockpiling corners is we have some depth there. And we all know getting one (or more) high picks would go a long way in a rebuild.

And if the answer is no, YOU HAVE TO TRADE HIM, because you can't let him get to FA and lose him for nothing.

@RichCimini: Talked to someone familiar with Woody Johnson's thinking; he's not optimistic about re-signing Revis and likely will explore trade. #Jets

+1 ****ing billion. The draft is a total crap shoot even for the best drafting teams. Let's trade the all time most dominant CB at his lowest value ever.

Anyone who is in favor of him being traded should understand before it happens you will not being getting fair value in return. It is a buyers market for him at this time. Not good for the NYJs

TOTAL Crapshoot? yes, if you are the JETS.

NOT for many other teams.

If he chooses to hold out, then trade him immediately. If not, let him play and trade him at the deadline so that he could possibly show that he is good and gain more value.

If we don't trade him, he walks in 2014 and we get nothing to show for it but (maybe) a compensatory 3rd? **** that.

I've only read through the first page and can see that the thread already goes AT LEAST 3 pages.

I <3 Revis. The player on the field, the player who speaks to the media - classy, the position that he plays. the fact his MERE PRESENCE on OUR team makes us a headliner (along w/a plethora of other things), and consistently sentenced with "THE Greatest EVER" DEFENDER (or) CORNERBACK (and I grew up watching Darrell Green, Rod Woodson, & PrimeTime) TO PLAY THE GAME.

You realize that this kind of player comes across your team ONCE in a lifetime, and the FACT he was DRAFTED and REPRESENTED your TEAM PROUDLY on the field makes your heart SWELL with pride. Talk all the $hit you want about how the Jets suck......yeah..........?............... but we got REVIS!

All that said, here is a nice summary from Wikipedia (maybe CLEARLY the world's most reliable fact checker, but MOST DEFINITELY a good sample size-sarcasm)

"On October 12, 1989, between the Dallas Cowboys and the Minnesota Vikings.

The Herschel Walker trade, also known as "The Great Train Robbery", was the largest player trade in the history of the National Football League.[1] It involved 18 players and draft picks.

Johnson felt the Cowboys were so terrible that only a blockbuster trade could help them. He briefly considered trading wide receiver Michael Irvin to the Los Angeles Raiders, but Raiders owner Al Davis essentially
talked Johnson out of the trade by saying, "You sure you want to do that? Who is going to catch passes for you?" Johnson felt that Walker was the only remaining bargaining chip they had.

The trade:

Minnesota Vikings received
RB Herschel Walker
Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1990 (54) (Mike Jones)
San Diego's 5th round pick - 1990 (116) (Reggie Thornton)
Dallas's 10th round pick - 1990 (249) (Pat Newman)
Dallas's 3rd round pick - 1991 (68) (Jake Reed)

Dallas Cowboys received
LB Jesse Solomon
LB David Howard
CB Issiac Holt
RB Darrin Nelson (traded to San Diego after he refused to report to Dallas)
DE Alex Stewart
Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1990 (21) (traded this pick along with pick (81) for pick (17) from Pittsburgh to draft Emmitt Smith)
Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1990 (47) (Alexander Wright)
Minnesota's 6th round pick in 1990 (158) (traded to New Orleans, who drafted James Williams)
Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1991 (conditional) - (12) (Alvin Harper)
Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1991 (conditional) - (38) (Dixon Edwards)
Minnesota's 2nd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (37) (Darren Woodson)
Minnesota's 3rd round pick in 1992 (conditional) - (71) (traded to New England, who drafted Kevin Turner)
Minnesota's 1st round pick in 1993 (conditional) - (13) (traded to Philadelphia Eagles, and then to the Houston Oilers, who drafted Brad Hopkins)

Aftermath and legacy

Dallas ended up with a total of six of Minnesota's picks over the succeeding years, two 1st round and one 2nd round picks were used to draft Emmitt Smith and Darren Woodson, winning multiple Super Bowls and being voted on to go to the Pro Bowl numerous times also. Jimmy Johnson used the other draft picks to make trades with other teams around the NFL. One of the trades led to obtaining the first overall draft pick in 1991, which was used to draft Russell Maryland. In other words, the trade of Herschel Walker to the Vikings contributed largely to the Cowboys' success in the early 1990s

THAT BEING EXPRESSED, not saying lightning strikes twice because it CAN, BUT I KNOW OPPORTUNITY ONLY KNOCKS ONCE!
