Do the Jets really want to guarantee Sanchez more upfront money and extend his contract even further?

That's what it would take to restructure in order to reduce his cap liability.

If they give him more money upfront, then the back is still light, in case they want to release him

No QB's in the 1st three rounds for me unless one of the top guys miraculously fell to the 3rd round.

I'd also like to see them pass on this year's crop.

But, if you draft one, you better love him, and play him from the git-go.

I'm just asking a question. I'm not well-versed in contracts, especially with the new CBA.

Check your PMs, BTW.

It wouldnt be upfront money, it would be guaranteeing money down the road.

Maybe it's late in the thread for this, but for the record, all Tony said (on his draft forum) was:
Quote:
there will be some Jets/QB news posted in the next 16 hours....
He didn't imply this was major groundbreaking news... Neonleon was the one getting all excited, not Tony...

checked out Tony's post at DI and he clearly does not predict earthshaking BREAKING NEWS

his 16 hour clock expires at 12:22 PM today..... however I am willing to give him an "inclement weather" extension (with no cap consequences) provided the news is that Teblow is being released

#jets scouted him this season. RT @NFL_ATL: Report: Jets, Chiefs, Eagles 'think highly' of @SyracuseU QB Ryan Nassib http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...gn=Twitter_atl

That's most likely all this news is. Either that or the Sanchez contract restructure. Nothing really huge.

The QB's coming out this year are 4th rounders and back. No need to take a flyer on anyone earlier than the 4th.

How and why would the Jets give Sanchez MORE money upfront to lighten the back end? His salary isnt guaranteed for 2014 as it is, how do you lighten that up?

Jets have zero choice but to keep Sanchez this year (hopefully as backup) and if they can defray some of the cap hit over a couple of years isntead of it all coming this year it makes some sense. But the cap hit going forward has to be small enough where we wouldn't feel it when we are forced to cut him next year.

The only way I support a Sanchez restructure is if it makes him easier to get rid of next year. Anything that would make it tougher to dump him after this year would be a totally idiotic move.

Perhaps they have told him he is going to get dumped next year for sure 100% then get together and make the best of it for both sides.

This. While I think we could reach for one in the 2nd/3rd, there will be no pressure on the rookie. We will likely start the year with Sanchez who will likely crap the bed and then the rookie can step in with ZERO pressure. Best case scenario the rookie looks so good in practice/pre-season that we are forced to start him. Worst case scenario the rookie and Sanchez suck and we get a high draft pick next year.

Whoa. I just dont really understand all the nuances of contract restructuring, but in black and white terms, wouldnt Mark only want to restructure if more guaranteed $$$ was involved?

Just cant see him taking a pay cut, unless it benfits him down the line in guaranteed money.

Im with LagerFish on this one. I think we have to ride it out this year in order to cut ties with Mark after 2013.

Free the Idzik!

That was because Chad was in a position to get cut. Ultimately, he got every penny of the contract because his salary was converted into a low base and easily achieved incentives based on playing time only, which Chad met by playing the full season.

Jets can't threaten Sanchez with getting cut because he and his agent know it would be a cap killer for the Jets.
