Adam Schein on the afternoon blitz

Says if he were the 49ers he would call the Jets and offer 2 #1's ( #31 this year and an assumed late pick next year) and Alex Smith for Revis.

Would you do this, or better yet would SF

I think this over-values Revis, but I would obviously love it.

By committing to Alex smith you are committing to mediocrity at the qb position. We need a franchise qb not a game manager.

With the overall lack of QB talent in this draft class, go with Alex Smith as a "stop gap" QB. He'll do well enough this upcoming season. Might even help the Jets squeak into the playoffs. Next year, grab a talented QB and let him ride behind Smith for a while, learning along the way.

Jets could "afford" to take this approach as they would largely be free of the huge contracts. Don't have to worry about having a retooling year or two while paying Revis $16 mil per. Use the two #1 picks to bolster the Oline this year and next.

Sure. Help them take out their trash and in exchange get the league's best cornerback. Sounds about right. How about Kaepernick? That's something to talk about.

We dont need 8 -10 wins next year and get bounced early in the playoffs. Arent you sick of doing this every year? We need to go 3-13 and get the top pick and take the best qb on the board.

3-13 guarantees us pick 1 or 2 in the draft. It guarantees us that rex gets fired and a real coach comes in here.

Winning 8 games with alex smith is the worst possible outcome for next year.

That's one way of looking at it.

Another is that it would be nice to go to the playoffs and build from it instead of hoping for a more amazing turnaround from 3-13.

Also, with the 2014 #1 pick that we get for Revis, we can trade up to get the better QB, instead of hoping for a high draft pick by going 3-13.

SF picks at 31, so their "first" round pick is essentially an early second round pick. Revis is worth more than what amounts to one high second round pick, and who knows what it amounts to next season. Likley SF wont slide back that far if they slide back at all. So next years first is also gonna be a late first rounder, or potentially so late its really an early second. The only way those picks are worth anything is to bundle them together and try and move ahead of someone trading ahead of the Jets at pick 9 this year.

The flip side is this tho... if Revis goes anyway and we get cock for him, then by all means lets get as much of whatever as we can get while we can get it.

Quantity wise... you are talking a total of three players for the price of one. On the surface, eh.... not interested tho. This would def give them alot of flexibility in the next two drafts tho.

The first thing to decide is if you are going to commit long term to Revis nor not. If you are then work out that extension sooner or later. If however the vibe you are getting is that he is going to be unaffordable then you need to look at a trade and get the best deal possible.

In this deal the whole key would be the term and cost of Alex Smith. If you could find a way to retain him for a few years at a reasonable cap hit I would have no problem going for him even though I think he is not the long term answer.

Two late 1st rounders and a stop gap Qb might be the best deal you are offered and it is better than letting him walk for a 3rd rounder at the end of next year.

Another guy that chooses to ignore the cap.

Pro bowl FS Goldson is a FA, Delanie Walker is a FA, Both DT Sapogoa and Francouis are Free agents, never mind role players such as Moss, Ginn, and Leonard Davis. In two years, Aldon Smith and Kapernick are both FA.
They are 4 mill under the cap and will save almost 7 mill from the cap from cutting Smith. But Revis will get all that in his first year.

And Beerfish, what are the odds that the jets don't sign any FA if Revis walks? If so there goes the 3rd.

THe Jets will either have to pay Revis Mario Williams money (cap value of nearly $20M per year) or lose him for the last pick of the 3rd round this season.

It's really not a bad deal. And, again, it cannot be said enough. The Jets are almost certainly not going to have a top 3 pick anymore, even with Mark Sanchez. And, frankly, teams that suck, generally continue to suck. Getting a top 5 pick isn't going to make the Jets much better.

What is interesting about Smith's contract is that it becomes fully guaranteed on April 1 for 8.25 million. The 49ers have to do something by then, so why would some team trade for Smith with that salary and not just wait till the 49ers release him before the April 1 deadline?
