Songs with great bass

No specific style or genre, just great bass.

Dave Matthews Band's Stefan Lessard

Jean Baudin (composes entirely on bass)

Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre (yes, rap used to have great bass)

The Who's John Entwistle

The Beatles' Paul McCartney

Jet's Mark Wilson

TSOOL's Ake Karl Kalle Gustafsson

Metallica's Cliff Lee Burton

The Raconteurs Jack Lawrence

Cake's Gabe Nelson

Iggy Pop's Ricky Gardiner

David Bowie's Emir Kassan & Carmine Rojas

Limp Bizkit's Sam Rivers (say what you will about the band, but Rivers is a good bass player)

Korn's Reginald Arvizu

southparkcpa is the resident expert, I think. But two of my favorites are Carl Radle and Bernard Edwards.

"The Real Me" by The Who.

Entwistle is at his best in this song start to finish. Unbelievable bass.

Actually the whole Quadrophenia album is John Entwistle putting on a clinic showing why he is one of the best bass guitarists of all time.

Entwistle is a monster, but John Taylor is extremely underrated:

Watch what Mingus does at 35 second mark. On recording...Bass players of the NY Philharmonic said he overdubbed and it couldn't be done.

I heard this story from Jamil Nasser (RIP) of the Ahmad Jamal trio. Mingus had them come to his studio and he played it for them. He then firmly dressed them down and made it clear to them that what they do can be learned easier than what he does. Doesn't look hrad but is innovative and to the ear sounds impossible.

Never fully embraced the whole Entwhistle love and there are LOTS of people in your camp. Guy is a true professional, GREAT bassist but I never saw anything that told me he could separate himself from the pack.
