To my friends 32G, JWs and Borgo. I have thought LONG and hard about why I am not in the camp of Entwhistle. He is great no doubt. Here is my conclusion.

What Entwhistle does, just my view, is much easier copied. He plays loud and powerful and always had to compete with Townsend. So... when I see rock bass players, they all go loud and in your face and it has become almost accepted.

The skill that I did not possess to my satisfaction and have only seen in a handful of players is the melodic ability to play a bass, keep it in the back ground and create a terrific stand alone melody. Victor Wooten always talks about how the bass should NOT be a forward instrument.

Any trained bass player could sight read Paul McCartney lines. It is NOT difficult to play. It is the creativity. This tune is one a many examples of a walking, melodic bass line that could easily be a horn. BTW..I am a fan. I have seen the WHO twice.

No mention for one of the best rock bassists of the last 20 years or so? Definitely a LOT better than someone like Flea, good as he is.

I am biased because I'm seeing them live for the first time in 17 years next month. Should be awesome.

Also, what about this great bassline:

Dunno if the Wailers have featued, but they should if not

To cap it off, some amazing bass from the great Jerry Jamont

IMO, Entwistle's technique is not "easily copied". In the 60s, two musicians changed rock bass from being a bottom-prominent instrument to a more pronounced lead one. They are John Paul Jones from his days as a major session player (he's on about 90% of all pop/rock tunes from that era) and John Entwistle.

Entwistle, as Pete Townshend has said, was really a lead guitarist plying bass guitar. Without question (and you can look up all the various artists, both past and current, who laud him), Entwistle was an innovator with his melodic and percussive approach to bass playing, much like Stanley Clarke.

I'm a huge Fishbone fan. John Norwood Fisher is a monster funk/rock bass player. This guy cooks.

Southpark, check this out.

What? LOL. Maybe a little more help?

Not the most complicated, but just an awesome bass riff and vibe. Props to Bob Daisley. Also great/haunting synth bridge section.

Anyone who keeps up with Paul Gilbert's playing gets my respect as a bass guitarist. Sheehan is often astounding.

Here's a demo at various speeds. I quit.

Are you doing either "Kashmir" or the end section of "The Ocean"? If not, I have no clue. Sorry, dude.
