The Jets are about 2014 not 2013

The handwriting is on the wall. The Jets are not going to be a contending team in 2013. The team has gotten progressively worse since the AFC Championship loss to Pittsburgh in January of 2011.

The Jets fell apart at the end of the 2011 season and then regressed further in 2012 to a 6 and 10 season. The 2013 Jets are going to be worse than they were in 2012. They are bringing back the league's worst starting quarterback in Mark Sanchez and they are going to trade their best player in Darrelle Revis. Combine that with all of the free agent losses upcoming of players like Laron Landry, Dustin Keller,Brandon Moore etc... What you have is a team in transition and on a downward trend.

This begs the question as to why Rex Ryan is still here. The Jets should have closed the door and moved forward with a new era which has partially begun with John Idzik. This 2013 offseason is all about resetting the franchise for the 2014 season and beyond. Jets fans should not be in denial. Just look at the franchise objectively. The Jets are positioned to take another step backwards in 2013 before they can even begin to move forward in 2014.

2014 represents what will probably be a brand new coaching staff and some major tweaks to the scouting department. These aspects should have started this current offseason but we are going to go through a poor season with poor expectations and a bad team stuck in neutral for one more year. Hopefully, the cap and draft moves set us up for a brighter future beyond this year. Another poor Jets season will come at a time when the Superbowl is in our shared stadium. It's going to be another rough year to be a Jets fan. Tough pill to swallow but it's the truth.

Is that what people said in 2009? Is that what they said about the Seahawks, or all the other teams that turn things around. Rex Ryan is here because he keeps the team competitive when we have a horrible roster, and no QB. When we have a good team, and an below average QB we contend for a title. If he gets a good QB why would you not think he can win a SB for us? Why would you want to get rid of a guy like that, and bring in more coaches that haven't won anything, and that you will love, until you hate them, and want to fire them, and hire new ones?

That means he said that then...but he also said that in 2010, 2009, 2008 etc you get where this is going.

Not to be rude or anything, but no shat. Not firing Rex is a bizarre way of doing things, but he'll be gone after a failed 2013 - and remember, with Rex still here, anything short of playing in January is indeed a failure.

Rex Ryan is done. There is no way that he is going to be able to recapture the magic that he had when he first took over the franchise. Rex is a dead man walking.

The team itself from a talent standpoint is not even geared up to be a contending team any more. The credit card bill came due and it's time for the Jets to deal with their debt and their talent deficit. Rex and the franchise had a lot invested in Mark Sanchez and not only did he not become the franchise qb that the team needed but he's become a major liability.

Every aspect of the team has been in a downward trend from the QB to the coaching staff and the overall talent roster the last few years. In 2013, The Jets are going to be a very young and unproven roster with very few elite talents.

Time to come to reality here. The writing is on the wall with permanent ink.

Well said. I'm looking forward to 2014: an easier schedule, a new regime and a better Quarterback. I'm just hopeful that the team can be bad enough for a Top 5 draft pick (unlikely with this defense always being a top tier unit) so that they can land Manziel or Bridgewater. 4-12 > 8-8.

I honestly don't get posts like these.

You correctly identify the Jets focus as on 2014, with 2013 a lost year. That's as it should be - and every move the Jets have made thus far says that's the reality.

Yet you think Rex is a dead man walking - a fact you can't fit into the "preparing for 2014" frame, because firing him after 2013 means starting over with a new staff (rather than giving the 2014 staff a running start in 2013, allowing them to come into 2014 with their program in place and players with a year of experience in the new system).

Your conclusion, therefore, is that the Jets are crazy/stupid.

But there's a more obvious conclusion to be drawn that doesn't require believing the Jets to be blind to the obvious: Rex is not a dead man walking. On the contrary, while they are not likely to extend him after this year barring a miraculous run, the Jets' expect Rex to be the coach of the 2014 team so long as he performs as you would expect a good coach to perform given the roster of the 2013 Jets.

That fact is blindingly obvious, despite the idiocy coming from some folks around here, and in the media, who claim Rex needs to make the playoffs to come back in 2014. What makes it so obvious?

1) Rex's record with decent-to-good rosters. 2009 and 2010 demonstrated that Rex can achieve good results - and even overachieve - given a competitive roster, even given a below-average QB. 2011 and 2012 demonstrated that he can't overcome a piss-poor roster with an awful QB. If the goal is to find a coach who can go 8-8 with the ****-show roster we had in 2012, then sure, Rex isn't your guy. But frankly, I'm not sure who is. It would take a hall-of-fame coach to overcome the dreck we had out there.

2) Following on from 1, Woody Johnson's belief that, given the right roster, Rex can coach it to success, including a Super Bowl. (Frankly, it's a conclusion I share - Rex is both a good Xs and Os coach and a good motivator, and while he needs to grow in game management and attention to offense, every first time coach has rough spots that need filling in).

Put those two together with the fact that the Jets are obviously planning to have a good roster in 2014 and beyond and not a ****-show (why would you plan to have crap, beyond a pay-the-piper year like 2013?), and the fact is that Rex is likely to be the coach in 2014 barring an epic collapse in 2013 attributable not to roster makeup but underperformance.

In all seriousness do you have any idea how bad sanchez was and how much his atrocious play affected the teams ability to win?

26 turnovers in back to back seasons and we won 14 games in those 2 seasons....that means that Rex has enough ability to field somewhat decent teams even when his QB is playing at the lowest possible level.

Who would have kept this team focused and the locker room together when the defense was playing well while the QB threw picks in the redzone, and fumbled when sacked. How should we have done with an OC who had no clue how to run an offense in the 2013 NFL.

Yea rex deserves blame for sticking with sancehz, and hiring sparno, but blame him entirely is ridiculous.

As for 2013 being a failure before we even draft....can anyone say where we will be WORSE in 2013 then we were in 2012?

OC - MM is probably 100 times more skilled then sparano

QB - if we find the most conservative gmae manager in history, we will still be 2 wins better at the position. Forget if we get flynn and he turns into an average QB.

RB - Greene was unable to make anyone miss or gain yards after contact. Nor was he a good enough receiver to even make the defense think about screen passes. Powell or whoemver else will be a huge upgrade.

WR - Hill cant get worse and should show some improvement. Any replacement (Braylon, draft pick) will be better then clyde gates

Injuries - Holmes (while a jerk) will help the WRs. Revis will be back or will get us 2 young players in return. Either keller will be back or we will have a TE who is better then cumberland with his saved money.

I doubt we find the next russel wilson, but to throw away a season, is ridiculous

Even if Sanchez is the qb next year I don't see him being as horrible as he was last year, so there will be an improvement there

Greene is what he is- a plodder, certainly not exciting, but the jets oline didn't open many holes for him either. Backs that play all three downs are rare and getting rarer

I don't know why people keep saying Rex is a "dead man walking".

It's obvious that we're going through a re-building phase, so if Woody is indeed planning on firing Rex if we fail to make the playoffs, then I guess Woody really is an inept jackass. Why didn't he just kick Rex to the curb along with Tannenbaum if that was the case?

This team will basically have to fall apart completely next season for Rex to get canned. At least that's what logic should tell you.

Which is why the plan may not work. Rex could have been fired. We are assuming he can help rebuild the team. A team that he basically participated in the degeneration of. Woody has shown a lot of faith in him bc of his early success. We know he can coach a good or "ready made" team. But can he build a team and develop players? Remains to be seen.

Thank you.

And I will not subscribe to the notion that Rex will be back in 2014 until it's said as much in January of 2014. A new GM will want his own guy, period, and in all other situations like this after one year the coach is canned and the GM gets his own guy. Playoffs or bust, Rex, unless this organization is about to swing another first on we the fan base, and judging by Rex's development of talent thus far, they shouldn't.
