"Go To" Beers

The other beer thread is full of amazing, and often esoteric, brews. But let's put on our thinking caps in an attempt to list beers which, push comes to shove, would always be present in your home, especially if they're for you and not someone you're trying to impress.

If possible, please limit it to one or two choices. Just beers which are a constant delight to your palate.

Love Smithwicks...pronounced "Smitticks". Also, terrific regional beer here is Sweetwater.

My eldest daughter recently got a sales position with Sam Adams. Great benevolant company and clearly great perks.

SO..... I find myself drinking Sam Adams varieties. Most free BTW. I also get to try some sammies that have not been released yet.

Btw, bought these beers over the holidays, some REALLY outstanding one's in the group--the Gulden Draak, Ovila Golden, Straffe Hendrick Quadruple Ale and the Red Chimay. The Rogue Bacon Maple Ale (the pink one) was really weird (a couple of sips and you're done) and the Duchesse was very tart

The Rogue Bacon Maple is inspired by Voo-Doo doughnuts maple bacon bar. Out in Portland. I've had both. The doughnut is better, much, much better.

Newcastle Brown Ale, Guinness, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

My go-to beers that you have to hunt down:

Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Shipyard Export Ale, Shipyard Pumpkinhead, Harpoon Winter, Dogfish 60 minute, Geary's Hampshire Special Ale, to name a few...

What an incredible label. Really makes you want to taste that beer. Very refreshing in the Summer, I bet.

These are my minimum requirements to satisfy any beer mood I'm in at any given time and covers almost every base any guest at my home may request. Of course I then also rotate an assortment of additional "specials".

It's important to me that between the above, a fully stocked bar and mixers, that I can cover 99% of requests for anyone who visits. IMO, a good host can provide whatever your heart desires.

Nice top three beer selection , if ever you are feeling suicidal and need company while you drink that fridge dry, I'm here.

Like my fellow home-brewers Sourceworx, OrangeJet, Raoul(?), on JI, I tend to drink my share of home grown beer.

Right now I am brewing lagers (Oktoberfest, Czech pilsner) for summer consumption. (I visited Pilsner, in the Czech republic .. a depressing Eastern European industrial city). Lagers require fermentation at lower temperature than regular ales so winter is a fine time to brew a lager for training camp and installing the air-conditioner.

I spent my late teens drinking Smithwicks in the Old Country but today my go-to beers are Noche Buena, a seasonal Mexican Beer, Celebration, the seasonal Sierra Nevada beer and my favorite, Little Sumptin's Lagunita's rock star beer ... which makes me want to move to route 1, and watch the Surfers.

Outside of those winter seasonal beers if I am in a crappy deli in the North East, I know in a worst case scenario there will be Sam Adam's somewhere in the beer section. Yes, I admit the word "Boston" in the Sam Adam's description bother's me but that is something I live with in return for flavor.

Hey Borgo, here's a brew that I just tapped. I brewed it to mimic my wife's favorite beer, Kilkenny. It's an Irish ale similar in style to (but way better than) Smithwick's.



As for my go-to beers if all else fails, I'd have to say Sam Adams Boston Lager or Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Simple but tasty and enjoyable.

I'm on a session beer kick lately. In fact I'm developing a Boston Lager type of brew. German malts and hops, fermented as a faux lager. I'm using steam beer yeast to mimic a lager.
