'Imus Treatment' Ignored for Catholic Bashers
'Imus Treatment' Ignored for Catholic Bashers
Weighing in on the Don Imus controversy, Catholic League President Bill Donohue commented Wednesday on the way Catholic bashers are treated compared to the morning radio talk-show host. "Two years ago, Penn Jillette [of the comedy team Penn and Teller] went on 'Showtime' calling Mother Teresa ‘Mother F***ing Teresa’ and called the nuns who worked with her ‘f***ing c**ts.’ 'Showtime' is owned by Viacom and that is why I wrote to its chief, Sumner Redstone, to register a complaint. He wrote back extolling the merits of ‘artistic freedom’ and ‘tolerance,’" Donohue stated. "Last year, on Viacom-owned CBS radio, Jillette said Mother Teresa ‘had this weird kink that I think was sexual,’ compared the saintly nun to Charles Manson and said she ‘got her [sexual] kicks watching people suffer and die.’ Again, nothing was done about this. Donohue then quoted an episode of comedian Bill Maher. "In 2005, Bill Maher went on HBO at the time of the death of Pope John Paul II and said, ‘For those who could not make the funeral, the Vatican has asked that in lieu of flowers, just stop touching your d**k.’ He also said that the whole story of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the Resurrection was ‘grafted from paganism’; he ended by mocking the death of the Pope and the upcoming conclave. The letter I received from HBO said that ‘it’s a free country, and people are free to say silly things—even on HBO.’ Story Continues Below "Right before Easter," Donohue continued, "the Catholic League protested the chocolate Jesus with his genitals exposed that was to be shown in the art gallery of the Roger Smith Hotel in midtown Manhattan [located on street level, the public was invited to eat him]. Air America radio co-host Cenk Uygur, writing on ‘The Huffington Post,’ said, ‘So is the argument that Jesus didn’t have a d**k? Or were people offended because it was too big? Too small? Too immaculate? Not immaculate enough?’ Regarding Imus’s remark, Uygur called it ‘derogatory and insulting.’ "Similarly, Joan Walsh on Salon.com said the chocolate Jesus was not ‘a big deal,’ and advised people not to go see it if they didn’t like it. She has now called on Imus to be fired. Even New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg said ‘don’t pay any attention’ to the chocolate Jesus, but he now finds it necessary to brand Imus’ comments ‘repugnant.’ "In other words, Catholic bashing is humorous and an exercise in liberty. Racism is awful. Bigotry, then, is neither good nor bad — it just depends who the target is.”
http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2007/4/11/160828.shtml?s=icp Last edited by Come Back to NY; 04-11-2007 at 08:14 PM. |

So it's ok to say all that, but you can't even draw a non-offensive picture of Mohammed without all hell breaking loose?
Right. Gotcha. |

Why doesn't Jesus just speak up and smite all ye Catholic bashers down? He is real, right?
Or maybe Jesus is a Catholic basher himself. Or maybe Jesus thinks that a few disparaging words made by a comedian magician on a cable show is payback for the invention of the anal pear to force conversion. |

I wonder if Donahue will blame this on the Jews who run Hollywood like he did on TV when talking about Mel Gibson.

Now that you're inquiring, smiting bashers is the opposite of Jesus' message. Catholics and other Christians who continue to show remarkable restraint (as compared to Muslims) are in the right. Hack comedians with access to big audiences know this, you can see it in their work. |

I really don't think "continue" is the right word here. I would have to say "just started showing restraint recently".... |

I have no idea who Imus is, but I have no doubt there is a double standard applied to Catholics and Catholic issues from some quarters.
I doubt very much whether the comedian quoted in the original post would make fun of Islam in the same fashion; not unless they wanted a fatwa hanging over their heads. The Catholic Church has its faults, but being intolerant to criticism along the lines of Islam, whether warranted or unwarranted, isn't one of them. |

I guess the same could be said about the savages in Gitmo, if they didn't behead people, more people might be sympathetic towards them.. |
maybe if priests didn't sexually molest little boys people would be more sympathetic to the Catholic Church
A trifle harsh, Bit. I think those shenanigans are a thing of the past, well I hope they are. I'm a lapsed Catholic but I was at dinner tonight with a Catholic priest at my folks place; serious young chap and I highly doubt he is into fiddling with kiddies. More likely to give them a lecture on the differences between Immanuel Kant's categorical imperative and Heidegger's theory of being from an ethical perspective. You can't stereotype people on the basis of someone else's behaviour. My parents are rabid Catholics and their faith leads them to do a lot of good in the wide world; community service and whatnot. My Dad's Catholicism helped him through some very hard times in his life. Like I said, I'm not a Catholic myself and in fact probably would be classified as athiest, but religion is important for a lot of people. If someone is going to take the mick out of Catholics and their religion, especially a comedian/ne they should at least go to the trouble of trying to make it funny and not just offensive to the practitioners of the religion. |

:(
I guess the same could be said about the savages in Gitmo, if they didn't behead people, more people might be sympathetic towards them..
:( Meanwhile, God is up in heaven saying "Who the hell are these people and where did they get the idea I was on their side? Well, at least I still have the Indians...they understand what it means to be close to God. Hey?! Wait a minute! Where did they all go? Casinos you say? Hmmmm..sounds tempting. Oh well...when in Rome...." |

Oh, you would? Well, since you know so much, you should know that vengeance is not a Christian tenet. Don't forget who shows restraint today and who does not. And the next time I time travel back to the 1500s I'll be sure to chastise Christianity. |

Now if Imus said this, he would still be on the air. And you felt comfortable posting it on this message board. Thank you for proving CBTNY's point. |

If Imus said it he would be reporting a fact, not his opinion. Big difference. Should we pretend like the Church that it never happend? The Catholic church has been paying people off over the last decade because they refused to actually deal with the problem.
