Cool The Official Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Thread

There must be JI members who are currently training/considering training/used to train in BJJ?

So anyone else out there roll? GI? No Gi?

I was interested but dont want to roll around hugging guys all night long

I did six months of some kind of Kempo over 15 years ago, it mixed Jiu Jitsu, Kung Fu and boxing. The Kung Fu was a joke, it is the most wasted movements I've ever seen, it is more for shows. There was a lot of circle movements and funny foot placement. The Katas look good when someone small and graceful is doing it but they sucked for fighting and I was never small and graceful, I sucked at this part.

Kempo striking part was good a lot of low kicks and straight punchs. Normal 8 point blocking system was good but it took a long time to do it fast. I have used the kicks at least 20 times during fights or breaking up fights, they work great to get guys off balances so you can grab them.

The Jiu Jitsu part was easy, I was still doing freestyle wrestling so I went right into the top of the class in that part. Normal arm bars, wrist locks, ankle locks and chokes set up by low kicks and blocking.

Overall not a bad fighting form, I wish they would have gotten rid of the more of the Kung Fu influence. I would love to have a gym that teachs wrestling, Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing as a combined fighting style.

I thought about it and was very close to training when I injured my shoulder playing football. Tore up my rotator cuff and recently did some damage to my other shoulder.

No can do.

I have friends that have trained for years in BJJ. Great art and something I would highly recommend. I myself took Aikido for close to four years. Nice, beautiful art, but very difficult to learn. Technical. I'm currently studying Iron Palm.

I agree with NYM. If I had my choice, I'd definitely train in a grappling art and supplement it with boxing/Muay Thai. I think you'd be more well rounded.

I wouldn't necessarily discount Kung Fu either. Some forms can be very effective, such as Praying Mantis.

I meant the style they were teaching us, I don't know what style it was but it had a lot of circular movements and I remember one move with something stupid **** about a tea pot and saucer. The only reason why I remember is the first time we did it I starting singing "I'm a little teapot short and stout".

No need to explain, Mick. I think everyone here understood.

Most arts come down to the individual and what he or she takes from it.

BJJ is fantastic, practical and does not take a great deal of time to learn, from what I understand.

I started during the summer of '06 and trained 5 days a week for 3 months and loved it. I stopped when i went back to school and kinda forgot about it. I was more into the no gi training which i guess isn't really jiu jitsu but next month i'm going back with the goal of advancing to the next belt.

Should be challenging but fun. there has to be someone out there who is currently rolling around hugging guys as Mean Bro put it.

Cool

I train in JJ and Muay Thai. Started back in 1999 doing Ninjutsu and moved to JJ after. I train now strictly in JJ and Muay Thai. My MT coach is the top guy in LA Boxing in Upstate NY.

I train 3 - 4 days a week. Mon, Weds, and Fri. Then every other Sat.

I teach on Mondays and assist weds.

Love the sport. If anyone has myspace, I am part owner of a company that makes fight gear. Small up and coming company. You can find us at Sadisticathletics@gmail.com

Whap!

I read a book about Renzo BJJ and was going to check out the school in NYC. I just didn't have the $200 a month to join.

I will check it out when my financial situation improves and I get my cardio up.

Anyone hear anything about Brooklyn Jiu Jitsu?

Gene Dunn is a student of Renzo. I wonder if the school is any good.

I have my first lesson tomorrow at Brooklyn BJJ. I wanted to try Renzo's but I can't afford it. I'm going to see what this other place costs.

I train in Northbrunswick at www.advancedbjj.com.

Top notch place. I train with professional fighters and female school teachers. Currently I am a BJJ Purple Belt, and have been training for 4 years.

I just did a commercial for the school as well....I'd love to hear what you guys think, afterall you are the target market.

Unfortunately, I was the vid director so no acting skills this time.

If you go to the site, you can see me in the media section....

http://www.advancedbjj.com/media.html

Under photos, I am in the second row down, one over from the left. I am the guy on top, and am also in the next two consecutive pics in that row.

in the video is...

Muay Thai: Professional Muay Thai fighter Jimmy Smith of NJ.

BJJ: On top is Brian Katz, an RGDA brown belt. On bottom is Anthony Abode, also an RGDA Brown belt.

MMA: Chris Howard (RGDA purple belt) is facing the screen (currently 2-0 in amateur fighting in Delaware). Ricardo Romero (RGDA purple belt) is the guy slamming Chris. He is currently 5-0 in professional MMA and holds the Light Heavyweight championship belt in Louis Neglia's Ring of Combat (ROC).

The beginners are random students.

The Champ is Ricardo wearing his ROC belt.

Thanks for the compliment. Glad you like it.

Good stuff, wish I could do it. Just not happening, going to see how this knee surgery on July 3rd goes.

Still would like to learn some boxing once I recover from the ACL, but I doubt it will happen, too much risk.

I hear ya. More schools are popping up every day though, so one may be in your neighborhood in no time.

ACL is a tough road. Good luck with that. Best advice though, is to keep the knee consistently active once it heals again. A lot of people tend to rest it too much, which actually inhibits the long term healing process. I'm not saying go play a game of hoops right out of the box, but you should move it around, stretch it, and slowly build its strength up through continued activity.
