You are not a good Yankee fan, no matter what the situation is... if you are rooting for the Red Sox. No ifs or buts.

If I was alive I would of been on the Mets bandwagon without a question.
Ridiculous statement. Trust me, I was there.
I know some people on this board hate the Giants. Although I root against the Giants so the Jets can be the better team and not be upstaged (and not to mention I am aching with jealousy this week ;) ), I personally don't hate the Giants. Most of the Giant fans I know respect that I'm a Jet fan and vice versa. However, reading this board, I know there are plenty of people who know douchebag Giant fans as well. And of course we've all experienced the Pats* fans on this board (diehard and front runner alike).

I was trying to think of a parallel to this Giant-Patriot super bowl. And then I wondered how it must have been for Yankee fans back in 1986 when the Mets and Bastan (mispelled on purpose ;) ) were in the world series (I was only 7 and lived in Virginia at this time).

Which team did you find yourself rooting for that year, the other New York team or Boston? Did you find yourself rooting more or less intensly that year or this year?
It was the worst. I had a much stronger hatred for Mets fans than I do now. I actually wanted Boston to win, although now I'm glad they didn't.

What made it worse was the Yanks were good that year, finished second to Boston. And the Jets started 10-1 before falling to 10-6. Then they lost in Clevland in what was a horrible game.

In retorspect, I'm glad the Jets lost, because no way they beat the Giants, and that would have been unbearable.
No you would not. If you were alive, you would realize that the arrogance of the Mets fans in 1986 was so bad you would root against them no matter what. The Mets owned NY baseball in the late 1980s. It was torture for a Yankees fan. You dont understand that b/c you were fortunate to be a Yankee fan at a time when the Yanks won everyyear and where the Mets are second class citizens. It was tough being a Yankees fan in those years of Andy Hawkins, Dave LaPoint and Tim Leary
That was how I felt at the time. The Red Sox rivalry was not nearly what it is now. To be honest, I didnt' really hate the Sox until they beat us in the playoffs. I actually disliked Toronto more at the time.

But the Mets were so arrogant. And their fans were so arrogant. Really, considering the talent on that team, they should have one more than just 1 ring.

Dude, I like you, but you weren't there. The Red Sox vs. Yanks rivalry was not what it was today. And the Mets fans were just so damn hateable. Just like they say we Yankee fans are now.

It didn't matter to other Yankee fans in this very thread who where there at the time, they where strong enough not to root for the Red Sox! Good for them.

You were just twinkle in daddies eye when this was all going on no?

Wtf do you know?

Boston was more of a joke then a rival before the Yanks collapse in 2004 to any Yankee fan that I know..

And yes, we did the Boston Sucks chant in the Bronx back then, but we really meant it then :D

Good for them. I think with the Mets it was more personable. You didn't chat with people online, it was just the people you knew. I didn't know 1 Red Sox fan. But I knew and saw everyday 30+ Mets fans. Had to listen to them talk everyday.

I think half the rivalry isn't hatred of a team, but of its fans. And I didn't have any Red Sox fans to hate, but there were plenty of Mets fans.

Great point. Something that is lost on the kiddies, I think. The internet has really changed everything...

I know I don't let Mets fans, or even Red Sox fans under my skin. The Red Sox are our rival, have been before any of us where born, have been before the Mets where a twinkle in Mr. Shea's eyes, and that is a fact.

Rooting against the Mets vs the Orioles in '69 is one thing, rooting for them against the Red Sox in '86 is a different story.
I rooted for the Red Sox. I hated the 1986 Mets. The team was easy to hate. They were arrogant and full of A-holes. As much as i hated to see Boston win the series, i couldnt bear to see those jerks from flushing win it all
I'm not a Mets fan (Dodgers) but I sure loved watching those Met teams back when I was a kid. I was 11 or 12 when they won the '86 series. Doc and Straw were two of my favorite non-Dodger players. Those young guys were so talented.

Again, at that point it had been nearly 70 years since they last won a WS. The Yanks on the other hand had won more then 20 in that same 70 year period. The Red Sox were a punchline, not a rival

Yet they where in the World Series. Come one... I wish I was there for this...

Almost as good as the Yankees winning it.

Dolphins, but you can't compare that to Yankees/Red Sox.

I am a Jets/Yankee fan and have been since I was a kid. I rooted for the Mets that year, no way I would root for Boston ever. It's the same scenario now with the Giants Pats.
