Reno Air Crash
Just caught word of this about 40 minutes ago, waiting to hear from a friend who was there. It's not looking good as far as fatalities.:(
(CNN) -- "Mass casualties" were reported at an air show after a plane crashed Friday into an area in front of a grandstand at the National Championship Air Races and Air Show in Reno, Nevada, a spokesman for the show told CNN. Mike Draper said he's been told there are "likely fatalities," but it has not been determined how many or who they may be. The fate of the pilot, who was flying a P-51 Mustang, was not known, he said. Local fire officials are reporting multiple fatalities and critical injuries, according to Ian Gregor, a spokesman with the Federal Aviation Administration. Multiple FAA inspectors were observing the air race at the time of the crash, he said. Video from the scene, posted on YouTube, showed a plane plummeting from the sky, sending up clouds of dust and debris. Shocked spectators rose to their feet. "There are people still being escorted out of that area with various injuries," Draper said. Members of the National Guard, which were on-site anyway for the show, are also assisting in the response, he said.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/09/16/nevada.plane.crash/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 Last edited by Jetworks; 09-16-2011 at 09:25 PM. |

I read about it in the paper today. Only 3 people died, but 56 were injured, and it sounded like many of the injuries were severe.

THe pilot that crashed was a big P-51 flyer; there was a soundbite on KCBS of him describing how his plane was the only one to win (air shows) from 1945-1951....and NOW THEY HAVE MADE A RESURGENCE IN THIS ERA!
That's a big flaming piece of irony. yeesh |

Yea, I saw that. Here's hoping for the best for them. Ironic part is my friend was there to cover the air show and had requested a meet with Breitling to go over some stuff about their new models. They cam for him about an hour before to do the interview. I told him he now has to buy a new watch from them as a sign of gratitude.:D |

Apparently the guy flying it was 73 years old
No rules or retests in the air either? Think I'll have a quick look into the cock-pit on any future flights. |

-
We don't have Air Marshalls here in Canada. Why would be need Air Marshalls? when flying over looking for the closest thing to a world trade center (large building) to blow up, the terrorists would have to settle for the local Walmart. On the knocking myself off bit.........I will consider running out in front of a car later on this evening. |

Airliners.net has a good thread going on the Reno crash. If any of you are into the details, this is the forum to go to. Nothing but pilots and professionals over there. They notice three things: stabilizer trim is missing, rear tail wheel is deployed, and the pilot is not seen in his seat prior to the crash indicating he blacked out from G's:
http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/general_aviation/read.main/5257089/ If you really want to be enraged, check out the threads on Air France 447 which dropped from the sky over the Atlantic a few years back due to a freaked out junior pilot who misread a faulty speed gauge and stalled the perfectly functioning aircraft into the sea: http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/general_aviation/read.main/5152764/?nocache SAR I |

Surprised no one is talking about SwissAir 111. Enough there now for a great movie, RCMP officer who did most of the investagating is now retired and talking. He says he found a huge amount of evidence indicating that the plane was brought down. His boss told him to never mention this and change his report to say that the flights entertainment system had malfunctioned.
Meanwhile several others have come out to support the officers findings, then there are the $500,000,000 in diamonds that have not been found. Taking off from JFK the plane was to land in Geneva, it crashed killing all 229 on board. Even though most of the plane and its contents have been recovered "no diamonds" Folks saying if the terrorists took it down how come no one is taking credit? Maybe someone took the diamonds and made sure the plane went down  Maybe folks wanting to keep it hushed because they did not want a terrorist angle to bring the economy down? This happened just 15 miles away from me and I have been watching and reading everything I can find. If interested any Canadian paper should have something on it and certainly CBC news would. Initially and briefly, yes. There were witnesses that say they saw a trail of some sort heading towards the plane before it exploded. I believe there were naval exercises being conducted regularly in that area as well. I thought the official cause was fuel fumes that exploded in the center tank? |
