Toilet Bowl Literature

I picked up the Pro Football Weekly Draft Guide today. It's the first draft guide that I have seen so far. It hasn't been the same without Buchsbaum, but it's something to read on the bowl.

Of course, our team needs are out of date as it doesn't contain of our free agent signings.

In their mock draft, they have Chris Long as our pick.

1. Ryan
2. J. Long
3. Dorsey
4. McFadden
5. Clady
6. Long
7. Gholston

Comments on our picks from last year:

Revis: tremendous season justified decision to trade up

Harris: spectacular after replacing the injured Vilma

Bender: Saw some late-season mop-up duty: 2 games played (he did??? I thought he was inactive all season long. ESPN has Bender also listed for 2 games played)

Stuckey: placed on IR before getting a chance to play

Bender played but it was only on XP/FG not real offense.

What do you guys think about the Sporting News draft magazine?

I had one from back when we drafted Bryan Thomas. Looking back, it seemed on point with many of the profiles and predictions.

Would you recommend picking up one? Maybe I'm just better off using DraftDaddy....;)

Man if we really end up with C.Long at #6 I'd be one happy guy!
Also Mayock has us taking him... If this really happens... omg!!
I just don't see it happen...

I pretty much get them all. You can never get enough. The problem is that although they add in a Combine update article, all of their player times and measurements are pre-Combine.

I've heard a few people call the Sporting News mag garbage, but I find it to be pretty accurate overall with the exception of a few players that it will always be way off. It seems that every year they have one or two guys listed as a top prospect that ends up not being drafted (maybe medical concerns or legal trouble). Plus they miss on a few late risers.

The ESPN Scout's Inc rag is the best looking, but the rankings that they have for a player may be way off on ESPN as the draft approaches. I find it hard to believe that the Combine has that much of an effect on players.

The Pro Football Weekly magazine is my least favorite for content and layout.

Pro Football Weekly Draft Guide is one of the best guides out there. This is their early edition and it's not completely accurate. But if you look at page 4, I think, you can sign up for the free pre-draft guide and Post draft guide. Both of them are excellent. The Pre-draft guide that you sign up for is usually one of the most accurate one's out there. So it's like 3 for one. The magazine on the shelf now is a place to start and wet your whistle. There is another one out there as well. The early ones are never really accurate. The other really good one which isn't on the shelf yet is ESPN's. I don't expect to see it out there for another couple of weeks.

Like one of the other posters wrote, I get them all as well.

So, I bought the Sporting News Draft rag since it's tradition. Wow. I'm looking at the their main mock draft and I can't find Gholston. They had him projected in the second round (isn't that what the Draft Advisory told him?). Two other mock draft guys in the mag had Ghoston going 16th and 23rd overall.

They had the Jets drafting Groves at #6 (yikes!)

Interesting comments about Gholston:

Gholston could fit in a 4-3 or 3-4 scheme and has the size & speed to be productive at DE, tackle or rush linebacker. A dynamic ahtlete, Gholston can dominate some games and totally disappear in others. Many NFL teams will be wary of his inconsistent effort and focus. Gholston should be used only as a pass-rush specialist for a year or two as he develops.

They also mention his lack of hustle to the opposite sideline. Seems locked in on rushing the passer and is slow to react to runs. Rarely moves well laterally to chase plays, laboring down the line unless the ball carrier comes back to him. Takes plays off.

I think the Sporting News is by far the best of the magazine draft guides. I give them credit for having a different look to their board rather than parroting what everyone else is saying, and I find myself agreeing with their board more than with the general consensus this year. (And not just because they have Vernon Gholston accurately pegged.)
