One-Way to Mars?
http://www.universetoday.com/2008/03/04/a-one-way-one-person-mission-to-mars/
Will humans ever really go to Mars? Let’s face it, the obstacles are quite daunting. Not only are there numerous, difficult, technical issues to overcome, but the political will and perseverance of any one nation to undertake such an arduous task just can’t be counted on. However, one former NASA engineer believes a human mission to Mars is quite doable, and such an event would unify the world as never before. But Jim McLane’s proposal includes a couple of major caveats: the trip to Mars should be one-way, and have a crew of only one person. McLane worked at NASA for 21 years before leaving in 2007 to work for a private engineering firm. Being able to look from afar at NASA’s activities has given him a new perspective, he says. But McLane was still at NASA when he originally had an idea for a one-way, one-person mission to Mars. He calls his proposal the “Spirit of the Lone Eagle," in deference to Charles Lindbergh’s solo flight from New York to Paris in 1927.
|

realistically, a trip to Mars might be a lot more feasible if this is a joint effort between the U.S., European, Russian, and Chinese space agencies, rather than opposed to NASA going it alone. Politically, that has a ghost chance in hell of occuring, aside from maybe the U.S. and Europe creating a joint program. |

The US has the technology to send a man to Mars and back. It's more a matter of economics that's holding Nasa back. |

Dean, I agree. I wasn't doubting the technology the U.S. has wouldn't get us to the Moon, but merely from a financial standpoint, I don't think the U.S. could pull it off unless they were ready to make the type of financial commitment that was similar to the Apollo programs. Of course, if they had other agencies helping to finance this it would definitely become more feasible. |

Yes but that's only because the rover NASA sent there has a 464 Hemi in it. |

How do you know that? Because pictures of Mars' surface only shows rocks? Who knows what possibilities could come from going there. I think stuff like this is extremely imprtant to the future of mankind. |

Yeah, I'll give you that. And yes, they could find something of great value there, I guess. Even if you found something of value there, how would you get it back? But that's just me *****en. Money should be spent on science, I just think there should be something else we could do with the 10 billion or so it'll cost. Then again, the government would just waste the money on something else. |
