VP Watch: McCain-Fiorina?

You wouldn't think a failed ex-CEO (fired for cause) with no political experience would be a good VP choice, but apparently some in the McCain camp think so.

Speaks to the pressure they're probably feeling to offset the historic nature of the Dem ticket, I think, and the GOP simply has not done a good job at recruiting strong women candidates over time. (Christine Todd Whitman and Libby Dole are about the only ones I can think of, and Whitman is loathed by the GOP base and McCain probably doesn't want to make the Bob Dole comparisons any easier, either.)

If they go the minority-candidate route, young Louisiana Gov Bobby Jindal would be an interesting choice. Seems like a smart, charismatic guy. But it'll be hard to appoint him to be one 72-year-old heartbeat from the presidency and then rail on Obama's alleged inexperience.

At the lunch, Donatelli talked up Fiorina’s conservative positions against abortion and gun control, say people with knowledge of the meeting.

Donatelli confirmed the lunch conversation but acknowledged, “She would not be a traditional pick.” There could be pressure on McCain however to chose a woman or a minority running mate, given the Democratic field.

Fiorina’s negatives? She’s not a party figure with obvious ability to unite Republicans, she doesn’t bring a state with her, and she carries baggage from her time at HP, where she was ousted over performance issues.
