Mets @ Marlins

Monday, July 28

John Maine, RHP (9-7, 4.20) @ Ricky Nolasco, RHP (10-6, 3.99)

Scouting Report:
Mets: Maine finally got through the seventh inning Wednesday -- a feat he hadn't attained since May 7 -- allowing three runs, striking out five and walking two against the Phillies. His pitch count reached the century mark once again (104), but he stretched those tosses through seven, and, of the six hits he allowed, most of the damage came on back-to-back home runs in the second inning. He'll now face the Marlins, whom he has yet to face this season.

Marlins: Nolasco took his second straight loss against the Braves on Wednesday, giving up five runs -- the most he had given up since June 5 against the Braves -- on eight hits in five innings. Nolasco ended up striking out three and walking three before leaving with 84 pitches under his belt. Nolasco has struggled since going on a five-game winning streak between June 10 and July 7 -- when he posted a 1.83 ERA in five starts. Since the All-Star break, he has given up nine runs in 12 innings.

Tuesday, July 29

Oliver Perez, LHP (6-6, 4.15) @ Scott Olsen, LHP (6-5, 4.07)

Scouting Report:
Mets: Perez held the Phillies to one run through 7 2/3 innings Thursday, further cementing his lore as a big-game pitcher with 12 strikeouts -- six with Ryan Howard and Chase Utley in the batter's box. Even though he finished with a no-decision, Perez wielded an almost unhittable slider and an accurate fastball for most of the afternoon until he plunked Howard in the eighth, loading the bases and prompting a call to the bullpen. The Marlins last saw Perez on May 28 -- prior to his recent successes -- hammering the southpaw for five runs in six innings.
Marlins: The 24-year-old lefty was hurt by the big inning in his last start, a loss against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. A four-run fifth inning put him in a bind. He was hurt by two homers, and he's allowed at least one home run in five straight starts. In that span, opponents have collected eight homers. Olsen suffered his first loss since June 17. He had been 2-0 with three no-decisions over that stretch.

Wednesday, July 30

Mike Pelfrey, RHP (9-6, 3.67) @ Josh Johnson, RHP (0-0, 3.71)

Scouting Report:
Mets: Pelfrey continued his streak of impressive pitching performances with another solid outing Friday night. He threw seven innings of one-run ball and limited the Cardinals to seven hits, striking out five. The right-hander did not walk a single batter and has recorded only one walk in his last four starts. Pelfrey said the command on his breaking ball is still not where he wants it to be, but it's getting better. He has now won seven of his last eight starts. He has not lost since May 26 against Florida when he exited after just four innings. Pelfrey is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA against the Marlins this season.
Marlins: The 24-year-old continues to make steady progress in his comeback from Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. Johnson has made three starts, and in all three games, the right-hander was not involved in the decision. Johnson gave up two homers at Wrigley Field, the first two he has allowed this season. The last time Johnson faced the Mets was on Sept. 12, 2006, at Dolphin Stadium. In that game, he sat through more than 80 minutes of a rain delay, and he left after five innings with forearm stiffness. That was the beginning of his arm problems.
