Murphklecko's take on this election/Future.

I have a 18 year old son graduating high school this june. He really does not know what he wants to do either go to college ( he has not picked a major), go into the services ( army, marines, navy) or possibly just get a job. I do not like the Service part ( with the shape of everything who would want their kid to go over seas with all the shyt that is going on ) or the work part. What is he going to do, be a waiter, work in a retail store???? But he really has no direction as far as what he wants to do with a career. I explained to him he can take liberal arts and accumulate credits till he figures it out but I do not think he really wants to do that. Now I speak to him about the upcoming election... Out of the mouth of babe my parents would say he tells me the first election he can vote he is skipping. His excuse is the If Obama wins there is a good chance some White supremest will try or succeed in assassinating him and Biden would be president. ( he know nothing about Biden). If McClain is wins he is to old to run the country and is most likely going to kick the bucket and the a barbie doll is going to run the country.. Now before you crap on me for going thru the trouble of typing all of this out, I DO NOT AGREE WITH THESE STATEMENTS.. But it does bring up a very interesting point of view, the view of this countries youth.... I mean it is scary. This is coming from a mind mannered kid who is being raised in a upper middle class household with mostly Democratic beliefs...We are a very strong union family for 3 generations...It is just something to think about. He has explained to me they speak about this in school all the time and many kids and evidentally teachers feel the same way....

He should talk to my daughter (or maybe he shouldn't ;) ), she is anything but undecided. Raised in a Middle Income Moderate Republican household, she just voted by absentee ballot for Obama. Her future is into Marine Biology and she believes in protecting our environment for our own good. And even though she and I don't see eye to eye on everything, I am very proud of her ideals, passion and commitment. I have a close friend whose 2 sons go to a private college. They are all very conservative Republicans and my friend goes on and on about how his sons are making money day trading in the stock market. I had to chuckle and when he asked me why, I told him "My daughter is working hard so that your rich sons can have a place to fish."

Call me old and delusional, but I'll take principles and ideals over materialistic greed anyday. :)

I totally agree. I myself look at things very pessimistically since the crash of Enron..On the 23rd of this month I would be retiring from the big E...I lost all of my $$$$$ plus 16 years of hard earned work....I will probably never see a dime of what I am owed.. ( The class action suit is a joke) Instead of being set at 43 and working towards a 2nd pension i started over 5 years ago.....It makes me sick to think about what my 2 kids are going to have to deal with...

Murph, I think I met you last year at one of the 16H tailgates. The only advice I can give you is have your son stay clear of the military in the next few years...especially the Army and the Marines.

I feel for your son if he enlists in the Army or Marines and McSame wins the election. Get ready for at least 2-3 deployments to Iraq in the next 4 years.

It is def. a tough time to be a parent, if there is a easy time. I will speak from my experience, when I was 18 I did not know what I wanted to do at all. I worked in the Summer as a laborer and decided I will be going to college ASAP.
Your son's experience will hopefully steer him into a job he really wants to do or he will continue to work towards attaining a job he wants to do.

I am surprised by your answer or should I say surprised that feel that way.

Your draft prediction is pretty funny.

This isn't a bad time to be starting out. There are a lot of ways your son could go. Working for a few years could let him save a little money, learn the value of school, and enter it more mature and ready to learn. Or he could mix working with some courses at the local community college. One thing a lot of people don't think about--if you put off full-time college until you're 21 you're no longer a dependent of your parents and you should qualify for much better financial aid.
